Hi all -
My question pertains to GP 2013 but I think it works the same way in other versions too. It seems like when an existing budget is selected (Cards>Financial>Budget) and the new fiscal year is selected to enter budget amounts, it updates the prior years with that new year's budget amounts. I would think the same budget ID could be used and for each fiscal year have unique budget amounts. Otherwise having to always create new budget IDs for every new year would be very cumbersome.
Please let me know if I'm missing anything.
Thank you all!

that helps Bill. Thanks.
Diop, it has more to do with how the data is stored in the system rather than the how it is distributed out over the periods.
The budget is made unique by the Budget ID and not by the Year. The Year is a field in the Budget ID.
The other reason for a budget per year is that then you can display on a single report more than one budget per row of data.
Anyway - that should be enough. You understand why, hope this helps a bit.
Hi Mahmoud - I perfectly understand and agree with your solution, and I'll use it. I was just trying to understand the logic behind a new budget id for each new year, but maybe I'm over-thinking it. What I would just love to see is to just use the same budget ID, select the year to maintain and the gl codes (or use the export/import feature) without affecting any other year. And on financial reports, just select the same budget ID and the year to report on. This would avoid creating a new budget ID for each year. But unfortunately it doesn't work that way and I accept :-)
I didn't say that it is not possible :)
I was just proposing a method of creating a budget on the fly by considering a specific year's budget. In Dynamics GP; as I remember it was GP 10, a new feature was introduced to create a budget either for a specific fiscal year, or a date range.
If you pick the date range option, you can select the range you want across multiple fiscal years. Here is an article which shows the details on Creating Budgets That Span Multiple Periods
If you use the excel wizard and pick a date range across multiple fiscal years, the exported excel sheet will include your selective accounts for the budget in separate sheets, each for one year.
Let us know if you do have any further inquiries,
Thanks Mahmoud -
I'm trying to understand the logic behind the reason why a single budget cannot be used for different fiscal years. Is it because of the possibility to enter a budget for a date range that crosses through more than one year and if GP worked the way I originally thought (ie. if it allowed the same budget ID to be used different fiscal years rather than creating one for each year), it would have different budget amounts for the same period and THAT is impossible.
Thank you all again!
Oumar
Hello,
You may use the Budget wizard for Excel to create a new budget based on an existing budget

Hi Babu - thanks for the answer! that's what I suspected. Because it's for NFP with dozens of programs and a budget for each program, they have many budgets for a single year. I will use the import feature.
Oumar
Hi,
You need to use new budget ID for each year. You can export your existing budget into excel and import it back with new number onto a new budget ID.
