Mekorma Checks Vs GP Out of the box

Posted on by 425

I got asked the questions about why we are using Mekorma but I'm not sure why the previous consultants recommended the third party application.  Can someone tell me the pros and cons of using Mekorma vs GP Report Writer Checks?

    Tony,

Mekorma is rather easy to disable if you want to use the GP checks.  I don't remember the process off hand but the Mekorma setup guide explains it clearly.  One plus if you decide to use GP checks instead of Mekorma is not paying the annual support on Mekorma.

Thanks for your feedback and the one pro I knew was the benefit of the signatures base on the value of the check, forgot about the print MICR to blank cheque stationeryTo be clear we do have Mekorma right now but I was purchased and suggested by the company that implemented the software so I didn't know why they recommended the third party solutions and now I'm trying to find the reasons. One thing my end user in AP requested and we can't do it with Mekorma is to sort the Stub Documents by Invoice Number rather than Invoice Date. They would like for this to be the default and they didn't like the option of doing it in GP on a payment by payment base using the Edit Payables Check Window " Sort Documents on remittance by Number'. I know we can use modifier to make this default setting on this window but we try to justify the use of VBA coding and avoid customization as much as we can.

It looks like that if I would have use the checks format out of the box from GP this could have being accomplish using report writer ( Sort Documents on the Stub by Invoice Number rather than Invoice Date ).

Ian pretty much hit the nail on the head with his explanation of the differences between Mekorma and GP.  From my perspective, the real benefit is the additional security you get with the ability to establish dollar amount thresholds for multiple signatures on the checks.  Another benefit is it is much, much easier to modify your check layout in Mekorma than it is in GP's Report Writer.  I know there are some other optional products that Mekorma offers that are supposed to provide other efficiencies in payables processing but I haven't reviewed their latest offerings in awhile.

I like Ian's suggestion re: EFT.  Nothing like pressing a button vs. cutting checks.

The Mekorma application allows you to print MICR to blank cheque stationery. It also allows printing of signtures and you can determine which cheques require to be manually signed, and which ones can be automatically signed. I think this is based on the cheque amount...so payments under a certain value have the signature(s) auto printed, while more valuable cheques are left blank (maybe someone more experienced can confirm that it is based on the cheque value). You can also print copy cheques for filing.

The big advantage is of course the reduced cost of getting cheque stationery pre printed.

If you have big cheque runs, you might consider using the standard GP EFT for Payables module. It comes with pre set file layouts for the US and can easily handle European EFT file layouts as well. Once you collect and enter all your supplier bank details, its cost free payments (bar whatever bank fees your bank might charge). And you can still pay some suppliers by cheque if you want.
