How do I properly train clients when it's taken me so long to learn BC?

Posted on by 185

I am asking for guidance. I have been working in BC for two months and taking the exam soon, but I feel like this has been such an undertaking trying to learn. I find the program fascinating, but I am concerned with how a customer may feel. It's my job to understand the program and train them on these thigs. Does anybody have advice on how I could ensure I am not overcomplicating these features? After all, the point is to make the client's work-life easier and more stream-lined.

Working with a (or multiple) partner(s) is indeed encouraged, however in my experience a combination of both would be best.

First of all, events deliver sessions, not really trainings. Trainers (working for a training company or user group or independent or...) usually deliver excellent training, because it's their core business, usually based on 'the standard' indeed, and partners can deliver training on customizations or tailored to the specific business/implementation. I don't know many partner(s) who's core business is delivering training ;-)

Knowing what 'the standard' can do can also help to avoid doing/buying customizations with little added value...

Besides that, there's a ton of content also available on Microsoft Learn (free), so I would recommend beginning with that.

And, you are only working in BC for 2 months, so it's normal, don't worry about that, it takes time and experience. Passing an exam does not mean you are an expert in a subject :-)

There are user communities that offer various types of classes, there was a boot camp that was advertised on LinkedIn that happened yesterday and today. There are many other choices as well.

The issue is that all of these trainings are standard BC and will not address your particular workflows and processes. This is why working with a partner is encouraged.

Inge has given you a great reply.

Key thing to remember with training users is that most of them have quite a narrow role.

Ensure you understand that role before training them.

I am still learning something new almost every single day. One thing I do that works is log my questions as they arise. What does that feature do, how do I achieve this outcome etc.

Go to that list when you have time for more self learning.

RE: How do I properly train clients when it's taken me so long to learn BC?

First of all i want to say that i think learning Business Central is a great choice if you want to work in the ERP industry.

It is also very good to hear that you have a very reflected view around how long time it takes to learn a software like Business Central.  I have worked with the software for many many years but i still find new things to learn and new areas where i can refine my knowledge. So never think you know it all and stop learning new things - that is my most important advice.

When working with a customer you need to learn their business and focus on the areas of the system that they have the most use of or where they can have the best benefits of using Business Central. And it takes practice to understand your customers business and to learn how you should apply Business Central in the best way for different customers.

I also think it is smart to focus on specific areas of the application. Be very good in either finance, logistics, manufacturing or jobs and service.

Very few, if any, of the the Business Central consultants i have worked with or meet over the years have been able to excel in every part of the application.

These days there are also a lot of surrounding technologies that you need to have a good knowledge of in order to get the most out of Business Central. So for people who is starting new in the Business Central industry today i would highly recommend them to get good skill in Power Automate.

Another thing you should think of when it comes to train customers is that you should have regular training sessions with them also after they go live. As they get more an more experienced users they will be more and more open to learn new things about the product. And with monthly releases that we have now the product is evolving all the time and we as consultants needs to help our clients stay up to date with new functions and possibilities.

I would also recommend new consultants to find a mentor either within the organization you work or somewhere in the community. It is very valuable to have someone to discuss things that happens in an ERP implementation. Because one thing we can say for sure is that something is going to happen.

Welcome to to the world of BC!

It will take times to learn BC because it is a complex software. Especially now because it keeps growing.

When you train a customer, you need to learn their processes first and use their processes to guide them on how to do it in BC.

Don't train them on things that has no relation or benefit for them.

You could also reach out to a partner for training.

    Hi,

I would advise please try to learn the module or focus where the actually client is working on, Also Try to focus on other modules, learn how standard system works.

Maybe you can try some short learning exam occasionally

    learn.microsoft.com/.../

I hope it can help you.
