Wrong adjust cost entries

Dear All,

I have found some wrong adjust cost entries in my Value Entry table for a specific item, all inbound entries are correct, yet the outbound have wrong cost. There's no logical reason for this wrong cost. In the newest release of BC, there is a new feature to force readjustment and diagnose issues in adjust cost from the "Inventory Cost Adjustment" page. Unfortunately I am still running v24 on this database. I was thinking of deleting all value entries where adjustment boolean is true, mark the item as not adjusted, and run the "adjust cost - item entries" job again, what do you think> is there a side effect of solving this issue like this?
I have the same question (0)

    Hi there 👋

Thanks for sharing your issue regarding the incorrect cost adjustments in the Value Entry table.

You're right that the newer versions of Business Central offer enhanced diagnostic tools for inventory cost adjustments. Since you're on version 24, manually deleting value entries with the adjustment flag set to true and re-running the "Adjust Cost - Item Entries" job might seem like a workaround—but I’d advise caution.

Potential side effects of manually deleting value entries include:

    • Breaking the audit trail and historical accuracy of inventory transactions.
    • Causing inconsistencies in inventory valuation and G/L postings.
    • Impacting related entries like item ledger entries and G/L entries, especially if they’ve already been posted.

    Instead, consider:

    • Running the "Adjust Cost - Item Entries" job after ensuring no open transactions or reservations exist.
    • Reviewing the costing method and item setup to confirm alignment.
    • If possible, testing your approach in a sandbox environment before applying it to production.

If upgrading to a newer version is feasible, the diagnostic tools in the Inventory Cost Adjustment page could help resolve this more safely.

    Hope this helps!

    Why This Is Risky:
While your idea is technically feasible, it has significant risks and side effects:
    1. Value Entry Table Is Core to Inventory Valuation
    • Deleting entries from Value Entry directly breaks the audit trail and inventory costing integrity.
    • These entries are used for:
      • Inventory valuation
      • Costing reports
      • G/L postings
      • Item ledger reconciliation
    2. Adjust Cost Logic Depends on Historical Entries
    • The Adjust Cost - Item Entries job relies on existing value entries to calculate cost propagation.
    • Removing adjustment entries may cause:
      • Incorrect cost propagation
      • Broken links between inbound and outbound entries
      • Inaccurate G/L postings
    3. You May Break G/L Integration
    • If the system has already posted G/L entries based on those value entries, deleting them will cause ledger mismatches.
    Recommended Approach (Safe & Supported)
Since you're on v24 and don’t have access to the new Inventory Cost Adjustment diagnostics, here’s what you can do safely:
Step 1: Identify the Root Cause
    • Use the Item Ledger Entries and Value Entries to trace:
      • Which outbound entries have wrong costs
      • Which inbound entries they are linked to
    • Check if the item uses FIFO, Specific, or Average Costing—this affects cost propagation.
Step 2: Use Revaluation Journal (if needed)
    • If the cost is wrong but the quantity is correct, use the Item Revaluation Journal:
      • Select the affected outbound entries.
      • Adjust the cost manually.
      • Post the journal to correct the value entries without deleting anything.
Step 3: Run "Adjust Cost - Item Entries" Again
    • After revaluation, run the Adjust Cost - Item Entries batch job.
    • This will reprocess cost propagation and update related entries.
     Step 4: Reconcile G/L Entries
    • If G/L entries were affected, run Post Inventory Cost to G/L to sync the changes.
Note: This response was created in collaboration with Microsoft Copilot to ensure clarity and completeness. I hope it helps to some extent.

Could you please share the details of your costing method and adjustments?
Generally, there will be no problem with cost adjustment, it may be caused by your purchase amount.

    Thanks.

    Hello,

Thank you for your reply, I know it's not recommended to delete entries from the system, but I ran out of solutions, I tried to do the revaluation journal, but didn't help, I ran the adjust cost job several times, nothing changed. Concerning the G/L integration, I am not worried about it because they are not posting the COGS to GL, so the adjustment entries affect only the value entry table. I wasn't able to identify the root cause, nothing logical, as you know the inbound entries are the ones that affect the cost, yet all the inbound entries are correct, the wrong entries are the sales entries. Costing method is average. Upgrading to the new version is not feasible at this moment.

I need to know if someone has ever done this and what is his feedback!

    Thank you for your support.

    Hello YUN,

The costing method is average, all purchase entries are 100% correct.

If interested, I attached the ILE records of this item.

    Best regards

    Hello,

    Could you check:

    - Whether all products have their cost adjusted in the accounting?
    - Whether the entries have been invoiced?

I would also recommend running the inventory adjustment process.

    I hope this helps.

    Regards,

    Andrés

If no customization has been made regarding cost adjustments, I recommend submitting a support request to Microsoft for their assistance in investigating.
Cost issues are a serious concern.

    Thanks.

Deleting value entries is not supported and will cause data issues. In v24, rerun Adjust Cost – Item Entries or work with Microsoft support; the new readjustment tools are only available from v26 onwards.
