On-Premise roadmap? Dynamics 365? Editable grids?

So I am slightly confused as to what the current On-Premise offerings are for Dynamics CRM customers. I know that CRM 2016 was available on-premise but up to what version? I also see now that Dynamics 365 is now supporting Editable Grids as a feature in CRM. Is this something that is going to be available to on-premise customers in the future? Is MS going to continue to support on-premise customers? We are currenly on 2015 (on-prem) and are very interested in utilizing editable grids in our environment, however, we have no intention of migrating to an online solution.

    but there are also a lot of limitations with on premise dynamics 365 you wont get a lot of the features online users will get. You can see the following comparison that gives you a better breakdown of the differences between dynamics 365 online Vs onpremise;

Thanks for the quick response Raz. So my next question is, What is Dynamics 365 (on-prem)? And how to I get there from CRM 2015 (on-prem)?

The upgrade options and details are not published yes, and Dynamics 365 on-prem is not released yet, hopefully it will be released after few days.

But I think we can only upgrade from CRM 2016 to Dynamic 365.

Dynamics 365 on-prem will include the same Dynamics CRM modules (Sales, Basic Marketing and Services), the licensing structure for on-prim has totally changed, there is no Server Licence for Dynamics 365, only CLAs, below are the CALs types:

Dyn365ForTeamMembers SNGL LicSAPk OLP NL DvcCAL
Dyn365ForTeamMembers SNGL LicSAPk OLP NL UsrCAL
Dyn365ForCustmrSrvc SNGL LicSAPk OLP NL DvcCAL

Dyn365ForSales SNGL LicSAPk OLP NL DvcCAL

Right, well I think I found it here: technet.microsoft.com/.../hh699716.aspx

So looks like update to CRM 2016 and then apply the December update which basically makes it D365?

Just updated to the December update for on-prem and extremely disappointed.  Editable grids are ONLY available for mobile clients.  If you use an actual traditional computer (web), you are out of luck and it's NOT even an option.  I have so far found no explanation WHY MS would fail to support web clients.

Also finding it VERY difficult to find clear and consistent info from MS about what their plans are and why things are the way they are.  They have a What's New page for D365/CRM 2016 but details on things like grids and field service are unclear for on-prem customers.  Only if you wish to hand control of your data to MS and use mobile clients do you seem to get access to the good stuff.  They seem to want to assume that everyone wants to move to the cloud and use mobile devices.  That is not the case.  This is their wishful thinking, and possibly trying to force the market.

MS needs to do a better job of making things like this clear.  If the reason it's not offered for web clients is due to some technical limitation, it would help make sense of why they failed to offer this very needed functionality.  But in the absence of these details being CLEARLY communicated by MS, it would appear they are just playing games, trying to force people to use the clients they prefer and in the cloud (which is slower and NOT a fit for everyone).

    Very disappointed.

Wow. Are you serious? Thanks for the update Daniel. That is very disappointing news indeed. I was planning to update starting in the New Year, but now I'm not so sure. The sole reason to update was to be able to access the editable grid feature.

As far as pushing to the cloud, I can wholly agree with you. In fact, I attended a CRMUG conference last year and one of the classes had to be cancelled because they could not access their system online. Very embarrassing for everyone.

Personally i believe that MS is fixated (from the top down, Satya Nadella) on trying to force everyone to the cloud because they mistakenly have assumed they know what everyone wants.  What they clearly have failed to consider is last mile connectivity issues, which cause inferior performance and in cases like you've mentioned, the application is completely inaccessible.  If they don't snap out of it soon, they'll give many people many good reasons to look more closely at other platforms and products.

Looks like this suckiness goes beyond editable grids and so far applies to EVERY control I've checked.  Unless you want to run your business from a phone or tablet, or move to the cloud, MS is giving you the table scraps only.  Would love to see some documentation that says otherwise:

Just wondering if there has been any update or insight as to whether editable grids are a feature solely available to mobile clients or to web clients as well.

    Hi Joe.

I don't have a complete answer for you yet because I'm juggling a bunch of different issues as a result of the upgrade but I did just discover something promising and wanted to get this to you in the event it helps.

This morning i noticed that while i cannot add the control to a form, i could add it with web enabled at entity level.  I don't yet know if this is the first step in the process of enabling on forms but seems logical so you might want to try this first, then explore forms.  I did a cursory check and didn't find it on forms but have not yet re-read the docs.  What i think i have read though indicated this is NOT available for web till future update, so finding this in the entity surprised me.  I'd love to be wrong about this and find that it IS available in the December update but will have to do more testing/reading to confirm/deny unless you have any insight.

Editable grids definitely work on the web, I have it turned on for a D365 demo environment I currently have.
