Business Portal 5.1R2x64 Causes a "Could not open connection to SQL Server" error on first run

Hello,

I have been fighting with this error for a while now, un-installing, re-installing, etc.

I have GP 2010 running in SQL 10.50.1617 on SVRPG03 (Server 2008 R2 Enterprise SP 1 x64)

I have IIS, Sharepoint 2010, GP 2010 Web Services, and Business Portal 5.1 R2 on SVRPG04 (2008 r2, sp1, x64)

Sharepoint is working well, its database is running on svrpg03 and the site connects and works great, all the security has been setup and everything looks good.

I install the Web Services for GP 2010 from the GP 2010R2 DVD, it installs fine, went through the configuration wizard and everything setup for the company fine. I tested the urls as indicated in the installation documentation and they seem to work fine as well.

I install Business Portal, also following the documentation, it installs fine, into a site/application on sharepoint that was created for it.

When I browse to http://svrpg04:8008/ the sharepoint site loads and shows all the menus for Business Portal.

When I click on "Administration" or any other business portal link, or if I simply browse to http://svrpg04:8008/BP/ I recieve a sharepoint error that says "An unknown error has occured". I have googled and found how to turn on the native .net error pages by setting values in the BP web.config file. After changing the config I get the following error. (I also see this error in the event log)

Server Error in '/' Application.

A network-related or instance-specific error occurred while establishing a connection to SQL Server. The server was not found or was not accessible. Verify that the instance name is correct and that SQL Server is configured to allow remote connections. (provider: Named Pipes Provider, error: 40 - Could not open a connection to SQL Server)

I have verified that SQL is configured to allow remote connections from Named Pipes, Shared Memory and TCP/IP. As I stated before I was able to install sharepoint, gp web services, etc. and they all connected to SQL fine. I have tried to disable the firewall on both servers and it did not change the error either. I have googled left right and centre about this issue and cannot find anything that works to resolve it. Also, the error doesnt specify what is causing the error, be it GP web services or business portal, nor does it say what connection string it is trying to use. I looked in the Dynamics GP Web Services Exceptions Console and do not see any errors.

I'm at a loss, does anyone have any ideas? or do you know where I can verify the connection string that business portal is using? I thought it connected to the web services?

PLEASE HELP!!!!! going crazy :(

Thanks

    Hi,

    I have a few questions.

    • How many sql instances are you using?
    • Can you connect to the GP instance from the web server when not using BP?
    • You could take a look at the ~privatefile.dbauthentication.config file in the bin folder.  It contains the connection string that BP is using.  It's likely encrypted, but you could turn encryption off in the file to troubleshoot the problem.  (Make sure your sql user's password matches what is in the file.)

    Thanks

    Hello,

Only the default instance is installed.

Yes, I can connect to the server fine.

The file appears to be correct, the server name is right... I tried to change it to not encrypted and put in the right password and it just sits there spinning its wheels endlessly.

I believe my partner has Microsoft on the phone now, hopefully we will get this resolved.

    Thanks,

    Dave
