Changing a User's Manager

(0) ShareShare

Posted on by

I have a very large set of users, approximately 900.  I would like to update the User's Manager.  So far I haven't been able to export the users and re-import them to change the manager.  Is there a way to do this?  Or am I stuck updating the manager for the users one at a time?  It's not feasible to have to manually update each user.

Has anyone been able to update the Manager field by doing a re-import?

    Hi Devin,

I have tried using import both for Online and Onpremise version, and it didn't work.

Because basically the Import function is only for Update/Create.

Which is 'Change Manager' is a special request.

You need to create custom code:

    community.dynamics.com/.../set-a-user-s-manager-using-net-or-jscript-in-microsoft-dynamics-crm-2011.aspx

And it is unsupported way post so that you aware that this is not possible.

    nishantrana.me/.../enabling-plug-in-for-change-business-unit-and-change-manager-for-systemuser-entity

My suggestion, you create another custom field to store the Manager.

    Maybe Custom Manager field

Then you create a plugin that using the code from first link I gave to you and then retrieve the custom manager field value and then you set manager using the code from first link.

I hope this can help you!

    Thanks.

Not by re-import, no. You don't strictly have to do them one at a time - you can select multiple users who report to the same manager and do them at once, but basically yes this will still be a manual task unless you go down the development route.

    Devin,

Correct what Adam said, you can do bulk edit change manager for multiple users with same Manager of course, nice suggestion.

Just thought I would add that KingswaySoft's SSIS Toolkit allows you to update the manager using a simple 'Update'.

there is another way to add the managers using the following PowerShell framework, (No license need it, FREE!) and I can help you with the PS scripts to assign the manager, you will only need to have the domain account for the user and the same field for the manager.

I have created the Powershell framework to connect to CRM onPrem or online and have more than 70+ cmdlets to do a lot of administration task, one of them is assign manager to the user

download the PSnaping on the following location

    crmbuzzpowertools.codeplex.com

the cmdlet for assigning the manager is called

    Set-UserAssignManager -OrganizationService $CRMConn -UserDomainAlias "domain\myuser" -ManagerDomainAlias "domain\mymanageruser" -verbose

I will update the cmdlet to find the user with the windowslive Id or the email address depending on the settings.

let me know if this will help you.

That's great - I will check it out!

BTW - Kingswaysoft have a free version of their toolkit.

Anyone happen to know if this can be done with export / reimport now?

I know a bunch of things changed with 2015 update 1 so you can update some of this data through code in a regular update message, rather than special calls eg avoinding Assign, SetState etc. Thought things like Business Unit and User Manager were amongst the fields that could now be udpated that way and wondered if that translated across to export/import as well.

(I'm not being totally lazy here, but I don't have a multi-user system that "belongs to" me that I can just mess with right now, so trying to save setting up a new trial if I can avoid it, but will do if no-one know for sure).

    Hi Scott:

Can you show us where the free version is and what its limitations may be?

    Hi Debra,

Heres the link to the download:

    www.kingswaysoft.com/.../download

The limitation of the free version is that you cant schedule jobs to run periodically once you have created your SSIS package.

You can however create your SSIS package in Visual Studio and run it from there.
