Testing of a Configured MSD365 implementation.

Hi, I've posted in General as I'm new here and not sure where this might fit.

My background is green field development and I've never done a MSD365 implemenation before.

I was wondering what test "phases" are normally carried out?

I assume developers who configure the system will do an amount of Unit Test, and then BAs and Testers will carry out some System Test.

I have got a bunch of users who have written user stories that can be used for User Acceptance Testing and Business Acceptance Testing - but I was wondering about the need for Penetration Testing and Performance Testing or are there any other specifics or peculiarities that I need to consider.

Many Thanks for any help you gave give.

Dave

    Hello DavideEade,

it depends of course, on what kind of implementation for Dynamics 365 and Product you are referring to (For example new solutions, new Plugins or external applications, which make usage of the SDK/WebAPI functions)

In case, for example for using Dynamics 365 CRM Customer Engagement, working/developing/deploying with custom solutions, and as you mentioned, you are new to D365 implementations, it's a good starting point to have a look at the documentations for the so call ALM (Application Lifecycle Management).

This will help to understand best practices, about how to work with different environment and possible deployment ways, like from DEV to TEST, UAT and Production environments.

For this, please have a look at the following URLs:

    https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/power-platform/alm/overview-alm
    https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/power-platform/alm/solution-concepts-alm
    https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/power-platform/admin/wp-application-lifecycle-management
    https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=57777 (PDF document)

Depending on your needs and your implementation (for example to understand the performance of a custom developed plugin), you can create with the SDK for example console applications, which are calling the necessary actions for load tests.

Further, if you check, you will find many user created github projects with examples for particular Unit Testings. But I think, not many customers are doing after each simple solution deployment or simple customization/implementation, each time penetration Testings or similar.

I hope this information can resolve your asks and bring more clarification into deployment phases, used for D365 CRM for example.
