Min Max and Saftey stock levels

Hi i wonder if anyone could possibly help me.

My first issue is that we have found that when a stock holding level is set using "Min" in AX. the system will not let this level drop at all.  It will discount what we have in stock if it is on or below min stock and will prioritise safety stock and fulfill this above any customer demand?

My manager has fleetingly mentioned that there is a difference between safety stock and Min max stock and that there is a safety stock facility in AX rather than using the min max's.

Question: Is there a safety stock facility and what is the difference between min max v safety stock.

I am very confused so any help would be gratefully received

Kindest regards

 James

I have never seen any safety stock feature within AX2009, and if there is one, I would reallly grateful to anyone who could tell me where it is.  We have found the same issue that you have with regard to Min.  It really means minimum quantity on hand, rather than a safety stock, which is a buffer against procurement problems.  A system might allow the inventory to dip below safety stock, but not below min.  There is a small measure of hope....on the Inventory, Setup, Item Coverage form, on the General Tab, there is a setting for "Fulfill Minimum".  There are several settings choices, but the one we found to work the best, is Today's Date + Procurement time.  This will add the normal procurement time to the date that the inventory would dip below the minimum, before flagging for a futures date.  Make sure your lead times are accurate on the default item setup.

    Hope this helps

    Hi James and Lispyj

The minimum is actully treated differently depending on the MP settings.

First of all the Minimum is whats treated as safety stock in Ax.....  but it acts very differently depending on the MP settings

If the coverage code is set to minimum maximum, then it will look at it very strict and whenever it reaches minimum, then it will order up to maximum. and the time for arriving at the warehouse is based on the fullfillment setting. Days date, days date + procurement or time fenze (coverage horizon.) etc.

The traditional safety stock is minimum with the setting of days date + procurement.

If you do not have the setting minimum maximum on the coverage group, then the minimum field is still looked at as the safety stock, and againhow it is treated is up to the setting of fullfill minimum.

the minimum field is also the one that the safety stock journal updates, when calulating, when you recalculate what your safety stocks should be when looking at historical sales.
