I have DYNAMICS AX 2009 server in production and applies some update patches.

Questions:

How to I find out that my DYNAMICS AX 2009 Server already have the latest update?

Where can I find the Microsoft best practice AX2009 update guides?

Would someone please give me guides and hints?

Many thanks in advance for your helps.

-Edwin

First of all, an AX implementation is not just a server that you have to maintain and apply hotfixes. From the point of view of applying updates it consists of an application with business logic and a kernel that runs the application. It is usually easy and safe to update the kernel but when it comes to the application then to have all the latest updates is not always the best option: "don't fix what's not broken". An application is vast and you hardly use a third of it, so most of application fixes just don't apply to your implementation. And if you have any application customizations then you might have to merge them manually with application updates.

Anyway, the list of available hotfixes can be found here (you need an access to the CustomerSource). There are minor hotfixes and also cumulative hotfix rollups (RUx) that can be considered as service packs. You can use only the updated kernel from a hotfix rollup if you wish; note also that there are some known issues with VAT calculation in RU8 (application update). All the kernel updates are cumulative, that is if you have the latest kernel build then you have all the previously released kernel hotfixes.

    The Microsoft Dynamics AX2009

    -- Kernel version: 5.0.1500.1313

    -- Application version: 5.0.1500.1313

Does Microsoft DYNAMICS AX2009 have the up to date patches and updates?

Nope, you seem to use SP1 hotfix rollup 3 (RU3). Here are RUx build numbers and release dates:

    22-Sep-09 RU3 KB 974409 5.0.1500.1313
    22-Mar-10 RU4 KB 979125 5.0.1500.2116
    30-Jun-10 RU5 KB 982812 5.0.1500.2985
    16-Nov-10 RU6 KB 2405516 5.0.1500.3761
    25-Apr-11 RU7 KB 2503850 5.0.1500.4570
    21-Mar-12 RU8 KB 2677618 5.0.1500.6491

    Sir,

Thanks a lot for your good info.

    Questions:

     - How do I find out for any new update or hotfix when Microsoft is going to release?

     - What is the Microsoft best practice on how to keep track on those updates and hotfixes.

    Many thanks,

    -Edwin

I applied KB 979125 in my Dynamics AX2009 Test server.

    The update prompted an error:

An error occurred while Setup was copying the file 'Microsoft.Dynamics.Framework.ReportsExtensions.dll'.

Access to the path 'c:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\MSRS10_50.MSSQLSERVER\Reporting Services\ReportServer\bin\Microsoft.Dynamics.Framework.ReportsExtensions.dll' is denied.

    Completed setup of Components.

=== Setup was canceled or failed. For details see the previous messages in the log.

I was login to using local admin and run the KB 979125 "Run as different user" my credential with admin priviledge on AX2009 server.

After I applied the Dynamics Ax 2009 Hotfixes KB 979125, KB 982812, KB 2405516, KB 2503850 and KB 2677618.   The AOT  SysHotfixManifest did not show those KB.

Would someone let me know why?
