Hello everybody,

We are looking at movimg our business operations over to Business Central from Xero.

Just looking at a few things before we make the jump over.

One of the key questions we have is Items. So we are a powder coating and wet painting company, we provide a service on customers items but don't hold these items in stock. What would be the best way to define these parts within business central as we have an excel spreadsheet at the moment with all our customers theirs items, part numbers, serial numbers, prices, paint process etc etc.
I have the same question (0)

Hi, you can create Item as Service type.
For what items are served, you can consider using Dimensions to manage them.

Hope this can give you some hints.
    Thanks.

If you need to track the Serial Number of your Customer's Items, you will need to use "Inventory" Type on your Item, as it is the only one that allows for Item Tracking.  Because the Item is Serial Tracked, you can use fairly generic part numbers/descriptions, since the unique identifier is the Serial Number.  You can either keep the Unit Cost at $0.00 or write an Extension to exclude the Items from your Inventory Valuation.

As an alternative, you can use the Non-Inventory type, and add a custom "Serial Number" field that is free form.  This way you can record the information without having to live within Business Central's Item Tracking requirements (although you may want that capability to ensure proper tracking).

Good luck with Business Central!  It is a fantastic platform to build a business on.
