Not able to edit Aot element xml AX7

Hi,

I am not able to save the AOT element xml file after manually editing it and getting "Access denied".

Suppose i open xml file of table and add a field manually in it, rather than from visual studio designer. After editing when i save this file, i am getting "Access denied".

Also i am assuming, if i want to create duplicate of current table, i would simply make duplicate of that xml file. But this new duplicate xml file is not appearing in visual studio.

Please guide.

Thanks

Please give us more information. Is the element in your own model, or is it someone else's module (such as a standard model from Microsoft)?

The element is in my model. Lets i added a class from Visual studio and added a method in it. Now due to some reason I want to add a new method in the class manually by editing the XML file. Currently it is not allowing me to edit this file and giving Access denied error.

Unfortunately all I know is that I ran into a similar problem and I failed to find a solution. One moment I worked with a file without any problem, a short while later it refused to save and complained about access denied. (I didn't change the XML file directly, I was working in VS all the time.)

I checked permissions, although there clearly wasn't any change. I restarted VS and the server and it didn't help. I used "handle" from SysInternals to find which process was locking the file, and I found nothing. I asked in the R&D feedback forum, and I got a suggestion that it might be caused by the batch service, but killing it didn't fix it.

I end up duplicating the element and saving it under a different name, which worked all right.

Hopefully somebody else was more successful.

I had a similar problem a few weeks ago. When I did close all objects in VS one by one and then restarted VS the error was gone. I think it was related to having objects open from a standard model and also from your own model. Probably it tried to save the standard object together with your own new objects.

Trying to (unintentionally) save other files from standard models is a different thing. What you observed was the correct behavior, not a problem.

No. I tried to modify own objects and these objects did not save with an 'access denied' error. I can also recall that I temporary did not had a connection with VSO. Probably things were OK after reconnecting to VSO. I cannot recall everything correctly as it was too busy to get things done at that time.

I now it doesn't make sense, but I have fixed similar issues by changing permissions for the file, so the Users group have Modify permissions. I think it shouldn't be necessary as the axlocaladmin user you log onto the machine with is an Administrator which already has Modify access.

Maybe it is a side effect, but it makes me able to save my changes from for example Notepad.

Andre, I said what I said because of your statement that "it tried to save the standard object". That's clearly a different scenario then discussed here. If you talk about your own objects only, please go on.

Palle, I reviewed permissions and made sure that were correct (I was even able to save the file a few minutes before), although I don't think I tried to add extra permissions for other groups, only for the current user. I'll give it a try next time. I wasn't able to save the file anywhere (VS and notepad); it was rejected by the file system and not just a particular application. I'm not sure whether your problem was ibn VS too, or you had a problem only with other applications such as Notepad.

The behavior I saw was consistent with having the file exclusively locked by another process, but because restarting the server didn't help and handle didn't show any lock, it must have been caused by something else.

    Martin,

I did not mention that I changed the existing object. What I did write is: I had standard objects open while saving changes on new objects...

I was just mentioning a thought that maybe VS would think to also save the standard object or probably checked permissions on the model of the standard object.

I copied the quote from another sentence in your reply ("Probably it tried to save the standard object together with your own new objects."). This definitely wasn't what happened in my case - I didn't have any other file open, and as mentioned, it happened outside Visual Studio as well. Notepad surely didn't try to save some other files. And copying the object in VS and saving it worked all right - I had one class that couldn't be saved and one that could.
