Dynamics 365 Commerce as a headless CMS/e-commerce for custom storefront

Hi. We are thinking to launch a new e-commerce product and I have some doubts if and what Dynamics products could/should we use. In general, it should consist of:

  • e-shop portal - it is quite specific and has some custom customer interactions, so it has to be customizable,
  • back office for finance and warehouse - for this part we think to use Dynamics F&O (Dynamics Finance and Dynamics Supply Chain Management) products. 

My current concern is about the e-shop part. Since it has to be customizable, we would like to build the client side/storefront our self, maybe with Nextjs or Gatsby to build a fast static website. In such case, could and should we use Dynamics Commerce for admin (CMS + e-commerce) part? The more detailed question is:

  • Could/should Dynamics Commerce be used as a headless CMS and headless e-commerce for Nextjs/Gatsby storefront? Or should we choose a lighter alternative like Strapi + CommerceLayer (just like an example) for such case? Or maybe it is possible to only use Dynamics as a headless e-commerce while choose an alternative headless CMS?

Yeah, that's quite an open question, but do you have any suggestions? I have no experience with Dynamics at all :)

    I would refer you to the Licensing Guide linked on the Dynamics 365 pricing page:

    While on this page, there should also be a Chat with a Microsoft sales specialist that can be used if you have questions that are not answered in the Licensing Guide.

    Does anyone have clarification regarding the last question about the licensing? If I split the question:

    1. What is included in the Commerce core product that costs 180 usd/user/month?

    2. Does this core product include Commerce Scale Unit / Retail API? We need to have an API to call it from our custom storefront.

    3. What is included in the e-commerce add in that additionally costs from 4000 usd/month?

    Thanks! The video presentations are awesome and answers most of my questions :)

    Just one more short question regarding the pricing. There are two options for Commerce: the core and e-commerce add-in (Commerce Pricing | Microsoft Dynamics 365). Is it true that the core option doesn't include CMS, site builder and default web storefront? Those components are only available in e-commerce add-in, right? And surround apps like Recommendations, Rating & Reviews and Fraud Protection - are they included with e-commerce add-in by default or have to bought separately?

    As you mentioned it's a quite open question, and probably you have more questions about our product, so I will recommend you visit our doc page for e-commerce, where you can find a useful information about it:
