I am trying to install the visual studio tools for GP 9. It says the requirement is visual studio 2005?
Is there a way to get it to work with visual studio 2008?

Not sure if there is any way to get 2008 to work, but you are required as standard to use 2005 to be able to use visual studio tools for GP. And as far as I know this is the same in version 10. Not much I know, but maybe others can add to this post.
