random 404 pages when accessing CRM

This issue pertains to CRM 2011 using ADFS on a Windows 2008 server.

After resolving some issues with having multiple bindings to the CRM website, I am now faced with the problem that after a certain interval, the user receives a 404 - File or Directory not found page when trying to access the CRM page. It's not until the user closes all browser windows and re-opens Internet Explorer that they are able to access the page again until the next time the page errors out.

Joe, this could be related to the Token Timeout, follow the steps in the following post to solve this issue:

    Good Luck!

    Hi Gus,

Thanks for your reply. I have already increased the ADFS Token Timeout to the maximum value. I don't believe this is the issue as I am not receiving any prompts about my session expiring. What is interesting is that the original page that was open will continue to work once the 404 page is received. It is only subsequent pages that are opened that get the 404. And once the original page is refreshed or all browsers are closed and reopened, then the page can be accessed again.

That's weird...are there any other time outs related to IIS that could be causing this issue?

Yeah, I'm thinking it is an IIS issue but only related to that site, as my Sharepoint site is also hosted on that same box but does not experience the problem. I have a case open with MS already but no one can seem to figure it out. That's why I thought I'd try my luck here.

Did you ever get this figured out? I am also having the same exact issue.

    Thanks

Yes and no. It is an official bug that has been acknowledged by Microsoft after months of having an open case with them. It is an issue where the session times out and the ADFS token is rendered useless, until refreshed. The workaround has been to append the Org name to the end of your URL e.g. https://crm.domain.com/Orgname. I received a tentative hotfix release targeted for Rollup 10 :fingers crossed:

CRM 2011, ADFS 2, WIndows 2008, SQL 2012, Multi Tenant, Customised, 2 Domains - Get random but frequent 404 File or Directory Not Found.

We have exactly the same issue as you described earlier except we do have a full URL already. We are on UR6 and I'm sure the first thing we will be told is to UR to 13 or 14. Now due to the nature of our account this just is not possible at the moment. This is government \ lack of funding issue.

We have a complicated setup that is in pilot phase, i.e. 3 tenants on different app boxes and 2 web servers linked to a DB box and ADFS 2 box. The users are in a different domain than that of the servers, hence  credentials are not validated against AD on setup!  We inherited the design that I believe is a not a Microsoft supported architecture.

We get intermittent 404 on internal CRM pages, the resolution for the Users is to refresh the page. I think this is a token issue.

Basically without upgrading to UR 13 or 14 is there a solution to this? ADFS 404 error is all over the web in different guises and no one seems to have a definitive answer, even latest UR has not cured this in some instances.

Microsoft support might be possible but their first request will be to UR to latest. As I say the decisions are out of our hands as far as expense goes. Thanks for any forthcoming advice.

You can try increasing the token timeout. Refer to this article: social.technet.microsoft.com/.../7681.setting-the-adfs-timeout-for-crm-2011-internet-facing-deployments-ifd.aspx

I believe this fix was incorporated in rollup 11 or 12. However, I recall still running into this issue after applying this workaround so perhaps there were some additional fixes included in the rollups?
