Receipt Printer for Win7, RMS2 & PCIx Parallel Card?

Posted on by 60

We've been -successfully - using an Epson TM-8811P Receipt Printer for years under WinXP, RMS 2.0 and an old Celeron CPU - w/Parallel Port on MBoard. Naturally the XP Box was "past its prime"!

Deciding to move to a faster CPU and Windows 7, a Dell Optiplex was ordered - with the requisite "Parallel Card". What could possibly go wrong?

At the end of the day (or 3) the Epson Printer failed to work - both from OPOS and Directly from Windows 7. Epson's response (on a Conf. Call w/MS support) was that Windows 7 is not supported for that Printer NOR the USB version of the TM-88!

Newestech, our RMS "Support" Vendor in Portland kindly charged us $150 for a monster support call that failed to a) get it to work and b) not providing any resolutions or alternatives.

So, back to the old XP CPU, Rebuild, Re-install RMS, Re-configure and, a couple of thousand dollars later - works great now. Back to where we were 10 years ago!!

How can this possibly be when MS, Epson and Newestech - the Pros - have not a solution to Receipt Printers under Win7 with a PCIx Parallel Card???

Surely there must be someone out there running RMS 2.0 under Windows 7 with a working Receipt Printer - either on USB or Parallel add-on card??

Please share your working solution so that someone else does not have to go through this $2000.00 backward step.

Thank you.

    Hello Lotte,

    Thank you for your questions.

Are you sure the Epson rep said that the entire TMT-88 line is not compatible with Windows 7? According to Epson's website; their latest model, TMT-88V, is compatible with Windows 7.

    pos.epson.com/.../POS_DownloadController.aspx

The issue may have been that the TMT-88II is a legacy printer designed for a legacy interface. Microsoft has been strongly reccomending that system builders do not include parralel ports in their computers since at least 2002.

    download.microsoft.com/.../WLP2.1aPrint.doc

Also, 64 bit versions of Windows do not contain native support for Parallel ports. There is a good chance that parallel devices simply won't work in 64 bit environments.

I would reccomend contacting the printer OEMs directly and inquire as to which of their printers are compatible with OPOS & Windows 7.

    In reply to trent:

Just to clarify, this was no Epson Rep. this was Epson Tech.Support.

Here is the recap of the Epson conversation from a stellar MS support tech. - Clint. And I quote:

"....We called and spoke with Chester from Epson and he got our information and started looking into using an Epson Parallel Printer with Windows 7. He advised us that it may not work, and then put us on hold. After we were on hold for quite some time you called Epson from your cell phone to see if Chester was still working with us. You got a hold of another Epson technician who looked over your case and advised us that Their Epson Printers do not work with, and are not supported with Windows 7. You [THEN] asked about using a USB printer instead of a Parallel and they said that that setup was also not supported. The only option they would give you was to switch back to using Windows XP...."

Also (Re: your 64Bit observation) having spent 9 years too long supporting POS systems (10 years total) I did order a 32Bit Win7 Optiplex system. Ya know - just in case!!

    In reply to Gerald:

I love your opening line. My sentiments precisely! "...C'mon, you guys...."

Needless to say we are all flabbergasted by the simplicity, elegance and confidence of your solution. Right now unfortunately this is looking pretty much like a <rant>@#$^^% Epson and their printers forever!</rant>

I'm sure we'll get over it. Maybe!

Thanks Gerald. We'll check it out after we again rebuild the Win7 box and put on our bullet proof armor due to gunshyness!

As an addenda, if I were the money-losing client here (rather than the time-losing tech support person) I would, as a point of ethics and moral righteousness, immediately ask MS to switch my RMS Vendor from newestech to jrdata.us. But, that's just me :)

And yup, you do need a new website :) I can't do Epson Printers but I can help w/websites! cannonbeachcomputers.com is me.

great, I sent you an email via your website re my stinky one.

When you order the Epson tm88 usb card, remember the one for the II & III are different from the newer ones. They cost 65 - 70 bucks. A little more than a pci-e parallel card, but they work and are reliable. You should have Epson's opos v2.60 or later too. and I would be happy to be your official rms vendor. I have clients all over the caribbean and central america (as well as jersey, boston & mostly NY), so why not Oregon?
