is it possible to run efficiently in GP without having the manufacturing module when we are a manufactuing business? we have a module that includes BoM's, but no routings etc.

    Hi Mel,

Without routing and 'minimal/straight forward' tracking of WIP, BOM and Assembly module should suffice and normally the stepping stone to fully understanding whether a more sophisticated manufacturing process/system is required.

Please wait for additional inputs from out peers.

    Cheers,

It really depends on your process.  Call me at 321-277-1341 and we can talk for a few minutes about your requirements.

If you are really a manufacturing firm, you want the full Advanced Management package with MOP.  You get full MLB costing, reporting of actual labor, actual material reporting, detailed routers, more options in the BOM with scrap factors, et cetera.

In my opinion, the BE Lite Assembly process is for firms that take a dozen parts and throw them in a baggie with a rack card and need to simply roll up the parts usage.

As Richard already stated, it really depends on your process, but I’m going to present an alternative perspective leaning in favor of the Inventory Management and the BOM modules, both of which are intrinsic to Dynamics GP Business Essentials.

Both modules offer very elegant and full-featured options such as multi-level BOMs, lot and serial number tracking, and warehouse bin management.  This functionality is quite sufficient for most small manufacturers with single-day work-in-process production cycles in a repetitive manufacturing business.

Now I confess, I’m biased, because as a software developer, I provide reporting solutions that integrate with Dynamics GP Business Essentials.

Dont want to argue with Greg.  He is correct that some (about 5%) firms can use BE for manufacturing.

It is what BE does NOT have that creates problems for most manufacturing firms (outside processing, scheduling, materials planning much more than simple allocation, routings, labor cost absorbtion, overhead absorbtion, standard costing, multi step progress reporting and tracking, multiple/partial receipts, et cetera.).  If you need ANY of this, you cannot get it in BE.
