Moving Domain from local server to Azure AD

Hello,

We have a small Financial Department with 10 users located within the HQ Branch, 1 of 120 service centers nationwide.  We outsource Payroll and have a Vertical Market app that manages Customer service and Account Receivable.  We receive text files from the Payroll firm and Customer Service app that we incorporate in GL via Integration Manager based on ratios, all works well.

Currently we have an onsite dedicated server for the finance department which host the GP SQL database and is the domain controller.  We are running GP 2013 and using Management Reporter 2012.  The IT department has been standardizing services throughout the company in an attempt to deal with 1 vendor for internet services and limit vendors for other services.  A nightmare before with each branch contracting it's own services, many of them being other companies that were added via acquisition.

My issue is this, our server is the domain controller/SQL server/Management Reporter server

IT dept wants to move us to an Azure AD controller.

If they do this I know our local profiles will change and I believe I can use an A record in DNS to resolve any problems in finding our present SQL server, however, will Management Reporter be able to work within this environment?  Will I have to DCPromo the existing server and add it into the new Azure domain to add new AD domain users as MR users?

BTW, we are using GP2013, planning to convert to GP 2016R2 in preparation of moving to cloud.

thanks,

Your current on-premise domain controller should be enough. What you will need to do is create a site-to-site VPN between your Azure virtual network and your on-premise LAN. I talk about this in my article Implementing a Windows Azure Site-To-Site VPN. NOTE: The steps maybe slightly different since I did this on the original Azure Management Portal, which has since been replaced by the current portal, however, the principles should be the same.

Once you have created the site-to-site VPN, you can then add your SQL Server VM and Dynamics GP client VM and join those two to your on-premise network using an account that has the right privileges on your on-premise network (typically a system administrative account). By doing this, you shouldn't have to deal with local profile issues. I assume most individuals will remote into the GP client? Because another option is to implement the web client, which would require deploying IIS on the GP client VM.

Mariano, thanks for the reply.  What if the IT department is hell bent on moving the Financial department into the Azure domain, eliminating the Financial server as a DC?  I am going to read over your article and I am meeting with IT this afternoon.

    thanks,

What they want is also doable. In this case, you would setup a Windows VM with Active Directory and you would promo that VM to be the Domain Controller. You will still need a virtual network and a site-to-site VPN to be able to do the promo.
