Data Encryption Key Error

Hello All,

I was running a process on a button then an Error Appeared: "Cannot open SQL Encryption Symmetric Key because Symmetric Key password does not exist in Config DB. If you contact support, please provide the technical details."

I went to: settings > Data Management > Encryption Key  , Its empty as shown in the attached picture. However, If i enter a new key the following appears:

"The new encryption key does not meet the strong encryption key requirements. The key must be between 10 and 100 characters in length, and must have at least one numeral, at least one letter, and one symbol or special character. If you contact support, please provide the technical details. " data-key.PNG

Any Suggestion?

Thank you

    Hi Faith,

the message you've copied already says whats wrong:

The new encryption key does not meet the strong encryption key requirements. The key must be between 10 and 100 characters in length, and must have at least one numeral, at least one letter, and one symbol or special character.

Just try a more complex Key that fits the requirements and you should be good to go

I did and a new error appears:

"Data encryption can't be activated because the encryption key doesn't match the source encryption key used to encrypt the data. If you contact support, please provide the technical details."

This can happen in an on-premises environment if CRM is upgraded or redeployed, but the encryption key from the original installation isn't entered. Encryption is activated by default during the installation, but you need to enter the original encryption key to access the encrypted data.

If the pre-upgrade installation still exists, or if the key is documented, you can retrieve the key and enter it.

Otherwise, you can try running the SQL script in CRM Philly's blog article "How to Unlock Dynamics CRM Data Encryption." This will clear the encrypted data and allow you to enter a new key.

    Make sure to:

    • Back up your database first.
    • Review the article to understand what data is being deleted, because you will probably need to do some re-entry and reconfiguration of your mailbox credentials and Exchange Server-Side Synchronization.

    Thank you Gary,

I tried already this query, but still I couldn't get it. and the key is not documented.

    Hello,

I'm having this problem also after redeploying our on-premise 2016 instance.

I have documented my key from the previous instance, but it will not take it due to "The new encryption key does not meet the strong encryption key requirements. The key must be between 10 and 100 characters in length, and must have at least one numeral"

The problem is there is no numeral in the current key. And if I enter something else it will say that the key does not match.

    Any suggestion is appreciated, thanks.

I worked around the issue by the article mentioned above. I have reset my key successfully now.
