Can we upgrade from GP2013R2 US Yearend (KB4046335 version 12.00.2198) to the most recent version of GP2015R2 (KB4073325 version 14.00.1100) directly?

We are upgrading from GP2013R2 US Yearend (KB4046335 version 12.00.2198) to GP2015R2 the most recent version.  Our company is in U.S.

What is the shortest path to upgrade?

Can we upgrade from GP2013R2 US Yearend (KB4046335 version 12.00.2198) to the most recent version of GP2015R2 (KB4073325 version 14.00.1100) directly by installing it and then running GP Utilities?  Or do we have to install the GP2015R2 RTM, then intermediate service pack/hotfix greater than 14.00.0983 **, and the most recent version of GP2015R2 (KB4073325 version 14.00.1100), then launch GP Utilities?

On Microsoft CustomerSource there is a confusing comment for “Upgrading to Microsoft Dynamics GP 2015”:

“**To install the 2017 US Year End update, you need to be on 12.00.2104 or later or 14.00.0983 or later.  Once you install the  2017 US Year End update, you cannot upgrade to Microsoft  Dynamics GP 2015 or Microsoft  Dynamics GP 2016, until the 2017 Canadian Year-End Update is released, target release middle of December 2017.”

    Hi Janet,

Any particular reason not to upgrade to 2016 ? do you have an ISV product that is not compatible ?

    Here's the upgrade path for 2015 from 2010 & 2013:

    mbs.microsoft.com/.../HOT_TOPIC_MDGP2015Upgrade

And here is the path for 2016 from 2013 & 2015:

    mbs.microsoft.com/.../HOT_TOPIC_MDGP2016Upgrade

so in short, you can go from 12.00.2198 to 14.00.1079 or later (which means also 14.00.1100).

    12.00.2198
    2017 Canadian Year End
    KB 4056557
2017 Canadian Year End or later
    Version 14.00.1079 or later

Thank you for your response. You're right, we could not go to 2016 now. You are suggesting for us to upgrade to 2017 Canadian Year End Version 14.00.1079 or later even though we are located in US. Can you please confirm that?

    Yes.

Because the **** NOTE 4 **** says exactly that :

    4. To install the 2017 US Year End update, you need to be on 12.00.2104 or later.  Once you install the  2017 US Year End update, you cannot upgrade to Microsoft  Dynamics GP 2015 or Microsoft Dyanamics GP 2016, until the 2017 Canadian Year-End Update is released, target release middle of Decembe 2017.

Since it looks like from your original post that you already have installed the YE US Payroll update and are sitting on build 12.00.2198, you have no choice to install the Canadian Payroll YE update too.

Derek Albaugh from Microsoft might confirm it, but even without the Canadian Payroll installed, it seems that this update fixed other issues that would prevent you to upgrade to 2015.

I think there was an issue with applying the 2017 U.S. Year-End Update (KB4046338) and then upgrading to Dynamics GP 2015, which is why it mentions in the 'Upgrading to Microsoft Dynamics GP 2015' hot topic to apply the 2017 Canadian Year-End Update, which is the KB4056558, before upgrading to Dynamics GP 2015.

You should also be able to apply the January hotfix (KB4073325) for Dynamics GP 2015, to go to version/build 14.00.1100 and upgrade to that from 12.00.2198.

We always recommend a test upgrade just to make sure everything runs smoothly, but based on what is listed in the Hot Topic, that is my thinking, as usually it doesn't matter if you're on the U.S. or Canadian patch, as both are on the same exact version/build anyway, so there must've been something seen in the U.S. patch that they state to wait and apply the Canadian patch.

Also, if you don't actually have Canadian Payroll installed, the Canadian patch will act the same as the U.S. patch in that it includes all patches and fixes that came before it, so there's no issues with applying a 'Canadian' patch if you don't have Canadian Payroll.

Let me know if you have any further questions.

    Thanks

Thank you Derek for confirming what I suspected too.

Thank you for your attention to the discussion, explaining the difference between US and Canadian yearends, and confirming that we can upgrade from 12.00.2198 to 14.00.1100.  We will be testing the upgrade on a test server before upgrading the production server.

We have one more question.  Which one of the following methods should be used, or is there a better way?

Method 1:  Install GP 2015 R2 (MDGP2015_R2_DVD_ENUS.zip) to a new directory, next install January hotfix (KB4073325) for Dynamics GP 2015, then run GP Utilities.  (Our thought is that the base for GP2015 must be installed first before any patches can be applied.)

Method 2:  Install January hotfix (KB4073325) for Dynamics GP 2015, then run GP Utilities.  We assume it is not possible to put GP2015 into a new directory with this method.  (Our thought is that the base for GP 2015 R2 supposedly is already included in the hotfix per this quote:  “Microsoft Dynamics GP 2015 (version 14.00.1100)  KB4073325 – RELEASED (Includes GP 2015 R2, US and Canada Year-end, and all prior patches)”.  We are not sure if “GP 2015 R2” in the quote refers to the R2 patch (.msp) only, or the full DVD installation of GP2015 including R2 patch.)

The quote was found here: community.dynamics.com/.../microsoft-dynamics-gp-january-2018-hotfix-has-released.

    Janet,

The GP 2015R2 DVD is nothing else than the RTM 2015 DVD with the added service pack in the "Updates" folder for the R2 release..

So either way you go, you should end up with the same result.

R2 is going to keep the same program folder as the RTM version.. there is no new path that the setup is looking for and this is valid for all the GP releases. Trying to put the R2 release in a separate folder is only going to make things more complicated for nothing.

PS: and yes, when coming from an older 'major' version, you have to deploy the base version first (you can't apply just the R2 .msp file).

Many thanks to you and Derek!  We got the information we were looking for.

We know now Method 2 won't work and Method 1 will work.
