Sorry for late reply. I'm still trying to understand what exactly are you trying to do. Could you describe what you are expecting competitor report to do?
What comes to my mind is the win / loss analysis of opportunities against competitors. Is this what you expect competitor report to provide you with?
If it is, you need to run your sales using sales cycles, which means taking each opportunity you win or lose through sales cycle. I've wrote a blog post on this some time ago. You can check it here.
With this I'd draw your attention to Close Opportunity Codes as system asks for reason you won the opportunity when you convert quote related to opportunity to sales order. One/few of Close Opportunity Codes could relate to different competitors. This way you'll ensure you have data for win/loss analysis by reasons of closing the opportunity.
You'll be able to see how many opportunities you lost/won just by searching for close opportunity codes.
