    Hi Eddy,

Can you check out if the following post helps?

    Best regards,

    Hi Ludwig,

i 've created the label file form VS project -> add new item ->label file; and there is no the option "select label value option"..

So for every label that i add to file the default labelId is "NewLabel1" and i must update  that string to DLX1,DLX2( in my scenario.)

No, you don't have to use meaningless numeric code anymore. You can now use meaningful identifiers such as MyFormCaption.

Which is  the "plus" of using meaningful identifiers?

  • Martin Dráb Profile Picture

The meaning. I have no idea what's the intent of DLX2, while MyFormCaption already gives me a pretty good idea. Also, if you merely look at the text in a language you can understand (if there is such a label, which doesn't have to be the case), it doesn't say anything about the intent. The same word in one language may be translated in several different ways to other languages, depending on context. A mere numbers gives translator no such context, while a meaningful identifier will.

It's a common practice - translated resources in .NET, for example, use exactly the same approach.

DLX1 is like  SYS1 , so in future also the standard labelId will be changed?

    ok i follow your suggestion

    Thank you

Reworking all old labels and code would be nice, but it's not cost effective. But look at how new labels are created - for example, open the label file AccountsPayable_en-US.

    Hi Martin

Please allow this follow up question:

How should label files be created in a multi developer scenario, where each developer has their own dev VM?

I’ve seen articles on creating label files, but there isn’t a lot of info available specific to a multi developer scenario.

I am worried about having to merge label files later on.

The purpose of my question is to set a standard in place, as developers move in and out of the dev-pool.  I was thinking to have developers create label files and include their initials to keep the label files separate between developers.  But I am unsure about the implications of doing it this way.

I haven't gone through that, therefore just wild guess:

    • create a separate model for labels.  create ONE label file (no reason to use a separate label file per developer.)
    • add it to VSTS
    • developers make their own labels - with or without initials, doesn't really matter.
    • when checking in modifications, VSTS should be able to merge the label file.

    Hi Celeste,

Having multiple label files for each developer sounds over-complicated. We use 1 label file and on check-in developer have to merge it. But usually it is done automatically by VSTS.
