Why did Search start happening in Description fields (Purchase Documents)?

A recent change is hindering data entry. This is the ability to search for item's in purchase line Description fields. Is there a way to disable this?

Background: At least in Purchase document lines, it now appears that when you type in the Description field, Business Central tries to do an item lookup. This is really hindering data entry. Previously, we would look up items in the No. field. Then change the default Description to exactly what was needed.

Now, after choosing the Item No., when we try to update the Description, the search kicks in. This risks changing the chosen No.. It also impedes typing, as the drop-down that appears changes the function of the up/down arrow keys, from moving between rows to trying to page down in the drop-down. You can't move down to the next line quickly.

It’s particularly frustrating when trying to add a number of Comment lines: Typing a Description ALWAYS leads to the drop-down saying: “We have nothing to look up here”. The Up and Down arrows are blocked.

How do we revert to the old behavior?

(PS: Apologies I tried to add screenshots, but it looks like this forum editor does not accept drag and drop images)

I'm on 19.3 and I don't have this situation with the No. and Description that you are describing. I pick my item No. after typing part of the description and then override my Description. Also Comment allowed me to enter a comment in Description.

I thought maybe you were dealing with a setup flag but upon further review could not find anything.

    Hi

As Kim mentioned I tested in 19.3 and could not reproduce this scenario. See below video. Can you please tell me how I can reproduce this behavior?

Thanks, Kim and Mahgah. We are on 19.4.35398.35925

I'll try to post some images.

(Mah, how did you make that video?)

I saw the behavior in 19.4 you are right. I wonder what they have changed here.

yzhums  is it anyway that we can see what is a difference between 19.3 and 19.4 for Purchase Order Line Description section? 19.3 does not try to load description based on typed info but 19.4 does. Thanks

Also for video, I used Screen to Gif software https://www.screentogif.com/

FYI, this is not just on Purchase Orders. I've confirmed it on Purchase Invoices, Purchase Credit Memos, Sales Invoices, Sales Credit Memos, and Purchase Credit Memos. I'm guessing it is also on Sales Orders, etc...  all sales and purchasing documents.

Oh no, this is an issue or going to be an issue for many!

So just tried this in 19.4. I entered my item number, tabbed to description, changed my description tabbed to location, hit down arrow and back to item number, no delay on the second line.

But it doesn't make sense that there would be a lookup on the description field. So I tested, leaving the item number blank, typing in a description which found the item number and back loaded it.

Really nothing is different just don't use the drop down on the description unless you want to lookup items that way. You can still lookup items, select them and then override the description and move on through the other fields.

    There's definitely a change...Mah confirmed it.

Our users are trying to move DOWN the Description column - not across the row. Using the DOWN ARROW . One scenario is to create a series of Comment lines. As you enter each new row, MBC will automatically set the type to 'Comment'. You could stay in the Description column and use the down-arrow to add new rows. Now, MBC tries to look up Comments. The empty drop-down disables the DOWN ARROW.

It's not just a hindrance on contiguous Comment lines. One might be touching up Descriptions on lines of type Item. Now, every time you edit a Description, to get down to the next row using the keyboard, you have to tab or right-arrow, down arrow, and then left arrow around the board, 'like Pac-Man' as one user put it.

I do not see the value of the change. And it is in the way, on all purchase and sales documents.

    Hi

Thanks for reporting it. Below is the video that shows this behavior. if you compare with the first video I posted you will see the difference.

Also you can see the difference in code for each version. I do not understand the code but I can see they are different
