RMS Migration to new hardware.

We are currently running Windows XP Pro and SQL Server Express 2005 with RMS build 2.0.1006. This is a single computer install. Database server and POS station are all on one machine. We will be upgrading to a Windows 7 Pro machine soon. I'm wondering if I can use the latest SQL Server Express package instead of the included 2005 package. Do I need to preinstall these packages prior to installing and updating RMS? Also is there a guide available for the packages I need to download and what order to install them in for both the SQL server and the RMS updates? I do have an active subscription to Customer Source. I think I understand the basics of backing up and recreating the database on the new machine. I don't know whether it will upgrade the database automatically on import or not. Thanks for any input.

With POS open Press CTRL + F6, Press the window button and check the box "show resizable border".

Thanks for the input. Other than having to fight a bit with the SQL installation (it kept giving me errors trying to install the management studio so I had to install the server package with tools already built in) everything went well. I didn't even have to call to reactive the POS. The old code worked fine.

I have one issue left though. The POS program opens fullscreen with no minimize controls. I'd prefer it windowed. Any way to fix this?

Use SQL Server 2008 R2.  Stay away from 2012 even though MS says the latest CU5 patch supports it.

Install Sql Server,  Then Backward Compatibility Pack,  Then Management studio.  Enable Named Pipes and allow sql server through the firewall.  Make sure to use mixed mode authentication for sql server.

Then install all your opos drivers.  Use the same version that the old computer is using unless upgrading peripherals.

Lastly install RMS and patch to your version.  Test everything.  Then patch to newer versions if you need to.

database is upgraded under the Administrator program, manually.  You connect to the database and then choose database -> upgrade.

MAKE SURE TO HAVE A BACKUP, and batch all credit cards before moving the database in case you need to upgrade.
