Hi,

Is it okay to use Product configurator while creating Sales Orders? what are the possible downsides of doing the same? if doing so what at what level do you recommend to create sales forecast?produced item?selleable item or any other level?

Regards.

Frodo

Using Product configuration is very okay... By that I mean if you have a high number of variants for a product or require a simple set of parameters to make you a large variety of BOMs and routes you should go for it.

Creating a model for more complex items is a very big task and modeling can take very much work.

Planning can vary based on what type of variation you have on your configured product.

Well....using the product configurator might mean that you change your business concept. Using just item numbers or item numbers and item variants might be quite a different in my opinion. Depends all how complex your business process is...it is very hard to say withouth knowing the business itself...

    Hi Frodo,

Sales forecast is  followed and generally recommended in MTS(Make to Stock scenario) -which means you are sure of the items and their respective variants and you just need to predict/forecast numbers.

if Product configurator comes in to Picture then it means you are working in either of MTO/ATO scenarios where you are sure of the items but not sure of the variants and you need to design BOM based up on the order which becomes very difficult to forecast.

In this scenarios you need to rely on safety stock and/or Purchase forecast of RM/Components rather than sales forecast and hence this is a huge business decision which need to be considered and aligns the way your industry works.

    Hope this helps.

    Thanks,

    Ganesh
