Since it is managed by the AX AOS kernel, it is hard to tell what exactly happens. Based on experience we know some of it, like:

    • AX AOS executable major version and modelstore version are validated, to ensure the AOS can start.
    • Physical label files in the App folder are checked for conflicts against modelstore, or they are generated in the folder if missing.
    • Net assembly files/DLLs are generated in XPPIL folder
    • If debugging is enabled, xpp source code and xml files are generated
    • AOS registers itself in SysServerSessions table as Alive
    • AIF inbound ports are started
    • Couple of RecId values are cached ahead
    • Ports for establishing client connections are opened

There might be a lot more going on, you could check the Application Event Log when starting the AOS process, it dumps a lot of details in there.

When stopping the AOS, it closes down client connections, saves edited labels to the modelstore/disk, deregisters the AOS in the server sessions table, closes down ports that it was listening on, etc.

You could also run a resource monitor tool like the one on SysInternals from Microsoft, which can monitor registry, process and file access to profile what Ax32serv.exe is doing.
