Couple of questions of Version Control for AX 2012

Hello all,

I am currently in the process of setting up a version control system for an AX 2012 RTM installation and have a few questions on the differences between using the Morph X version control, or integrating AX with visual studio for version control.

1) If we start using the Morph X version Control right now but later decide we want to be using visual studio, will there be any issues switching or history lost? Or should it be a pretty seamless transaction.

2) For the Morph X version control, where is the history actually stored? Is it simply in the AX database and we will need to be careful of restoring the database from a Production backup potentially? Also, will the version history of an AoT object move with it through environments (either by XPO move or by model move)?

Also, I do not see the need for either concurrent development in our environment or branching which seems to be the biggest differences between VS and MorphX version control. Is there another reason I might be missing though to select one over the other?

Thank you for all your help,

Phil

After doing a bit more research, it appears that my answer to question 2 above is that the Morph X VCS data is held in the Dyanmics AX database, and it will certainly be overwritten if I move a copy of production into Dev.

So I would like to revise my question to ask if anyone has implemented any successful strategies for dealing with this? Perhaps this is something the data transfer tool can be used to get around?

If you see a need to go to Visual Studio, it would probably be best to start with that than switching over at a later time.  The MorphX version control is really just a "better than nothing" solution IMHO.

If you are using the Test Data Transfer Tool to move data from production to dev, you can set it up to exclude the tables that stores the version history.
