Report Writer Error

Posted on by 1,930

I modifed the W2 report in the Report Writer.

I removed some of the fields from the layout as they were not needed. The report was working fine - until I made one last change to the layout. At no time I modified or deleted any of the Calculated fields. Now when I try access the report GP Crashes

If I try to export the package - I get an error Calc Field ' UpperAddress1' references a non-existent' calc field.   Again I did not delete any fields  - but merely removed them from the layout.

Now the problem is I cannot access this report in the report writer as GP crashes.  Is there any way to recover this as i spent a few hours lining up all the fields.

Thanks

Yes actually these were w2's so we used the 4 up laser forms.

On the other hand I do not have any issue with the lining up of the 1099 forms.

    Sunil,

Did you change the form type to 'Single Feed'? The default is '1 wide - Continuous'. It's the same thing with Forms 1099. Anybody have an Okidata printer laying around?

    Kind regards,

    Leslie

Leslie thanks for your response. I have recreated the reported and just moved the fields that are not needed on the corner of the page.  On another note, I do have the year end tax update installed and purchased the forms from Deluxe Item TF5211, and their web site indicated it was for GP. With the exception of employer address - no other field lined up  - some were slightly off, while others were completely off.

    Thanks

    Hi Sunil,

I have not had any problems with the w-2 line ups. Did you load the year-end update, often it includes tweaks to the W-2 and 1099 reports.

You mentioned "I removed some of the fields from the layout as they were not needed. ", sometimes the calculated fields are based on other calculated fields. If they are not needed, I recommend they be made invisible vs being removed. Deleting the fields from the layout is good enough to generate the error, deleting the field from the field list is not the control.

Note to self, never delete fields from the layout, just make them invisible.

    Kind regards,

    Leslie

    Re: Report Writer Error

    Francisco - Happy New Year.

sorrry but I already tried it - it crashes my gp. No idea why the report got corrupted. I had it lined up properly - then I had to add one more field for box 12 - saved it and printed it again - no problem. Went back and fine tuned the alignment of couple more fields. Then tried to run the report- GP crashed. Try to open the report in GP report writer - gp crashes. Try to export the report - can't do it because there are ciruclar formulas in the calc fields. Looks like I have to invest another few hours lining up the boxes - I have to expect it when you dealing with a report writer that was written in Dark Ages - pure piece of Junk.

You would think that as part of the year end maintenance they would update the w2 report so prints already lined up on the forms - but oh well.  Thanks for your assistance though!

The fastest way is to rename your current REPORTS.DIC, then open GP again, go to report writer, this process will recreate the REPORTS.DIC to a new one, then once in rreport writer, click reports, on the reports window, click the import button, this will allow you to copy all the customized reports into this new REPORTS.DIC and compare what you may be missing
