Want to convert existing Items to WMS items.

Dear Experts,

I want to change my existing items to WMS items. As we know WMS items have their own setup which mainly includes Reservation hierarchy and Advanced warehouse management inventory dimension.

Can anyone suggest how it is possible to convert an existing item to advanced warehouse management item?

Best Regards,

If you check this blog, you'll find you get stuck when setting the Reservation hierarchy:

    timsaxblog.wordpress.com/.../convert-an-item-from-wmi-to-wms-ax2012-r3

    If you go here:

    blogs.msdn.microsoft.com/.../introducing-the-new-warehouse-management-and-transportation-management-modules-in-dynamics-ax-2012-r3

and then the link for 'Presentations, videos and instructor-led labs from Microsoft Dynamics AX Technical Conference 2015', you'll find slides for a topic called 'WMSII to new Microsoft Dynamics AX 2012 R3 warehouse management'. There is also a video for this topic, but it seems that you now have to request to get hold of it. This should answer many of your questions, and includes the hint that a (CU9) hotfix was created for the problem with changing the Reservation hierarchy from <blank> to something.

    Hi Guy terry,

I have already came across the blogs mentioned above. I was almost sure that is not achievable. Was not able to find any link for the videos and instructor led labs. Anyways, i needed a certain answer that if there is any slightest of possibility can i change my existing items to WMS items.

Any suggested way, via customization or standard inventory closing approach? I have already tried the inventory closing approach and failed.

There is a link on the CustomerSource site where you can request copies of the videos.

Failed how? It seems to me that it should be possible to go from an Item which is not Warehouse management enabled to an item which is.

As you know to setups are mandatory for the Wms item

    1. Reservations hierarchy

    2. Advanced warehouse activated storage dimension.

I have checked and found for any item whose transaction took place in the system, I can't add the hierarchy or the storage dimension group.

For that I have tried after closing the inventory as well but failed to change the storage dimension and add reservation hierarchy to the item.

Can you test with one item (in a test environment)?

Remove all inventory of the item.

Close or delete all open orders for the item (that means Invoice or delete sales/purchase order lines; end or delete production orders).

Run inventory close (if using a costing method that needs it).

Remove the Storage Dimension group from the PRODUCT.

Set the new Storage Dimension group on the RELEASED PRODUCT.

Use the Periodic 'Change item hierarchy' job to set the Reservation hierarchy.

    Does that work?

Done with the work mentioned above, still not able to do so. It does not let me change the Storage dimension group.

What's the error? Can I get a screenshot of the old Storage Dimension group's settings?

Here is the screenshot for the storage dimension. As you can see the checkbox for advanced warehouse management is grayed out.

    Hi Zain,

I tested this in a CU11 environment. I created a new item with the Storage dimension group from your screen shot (FIFO costed, no tracking dimensions).

I purchased the item, and sold some of them. I have no open orders, and some of the item remains in inventory. If I try to change the Storage dimension group, I get:

'The new dimension group cannot be assigned. The physical inventory has not reached zero on-hand, while 'Activate closing of non-financial transfers' is set to Yes.'

I remove the Inventory using an adjustment journal and try again. I get:

'The new dimension group cannot be assigned. Physical inventory transactions might exist and/or financial inventory transactions are not fully settled, while 'Activate closing of non-financial transfers' is set to Yes.'

I run Inventory Close and try again. I am now able to change the Storage Dimension Group to one which has Warehouse management enabled.

I then try to set a Reservation hierarchy. If I do it from the Released product form, I get:

'You cannot assign a reservation hierarchy to the item because there are inventory transactions. You can assign a reservation hierarchy to the item when no inventory transactions exist.'

But if I do it via the periodic 'Change item hierarchy' job, it works fine. I then set a Unit Sequence Group, and my item is now ready to be used in Warehouse management scenarios.

Hi, Terry's steps look good to me. It would also be logical to count all inventory out, and close inventory, as you will probably be counting into a new warehouse with the "Warehouse management processes" flag activated.  Probably best done as an an end-of-month process.
