Looking for insights from other retailers on using GP 2010 for inventory management. We have a large item file (20,000+ items). We are a 34 store grocery retailer and wondering if others in retail have implemented inventory with such a large item file.

I work for a grocery retailer and we are currently on GP 2010. Looking at options for perpetual inventory. We have a large item file (20,000+ items) and some categories are not discrete items (ie. Meat is purchased in primal cuts (raw materials) and then sold under other item numbers (BOM?). I have never worked with manufacturing modules in GP before.

I am envisioning using SOP to bring in one summary transaction per store per day to keep transactional volume reasonable.  Also plan to use POP to bring in purchases and build cost layers.

My goal for this is to have a perpetual inventory system, with appropriate cost layers. I also would like to get better reporting out of GP as far as inventory levels, turns, GMROI, etc.

I know 2010 now supports SRSS so I think we should be able to get there on the reporting side.

We implemented something like this at a past retailer, but sales volumes were lower and the we had only discrete items (BOM's, etc.)

Just wondering if anyone else has been down this road before with this size of item file and can offer insights. GP2010 may not be able to have the reporting tools necessary and reconcilement between GL and inventory may or may not be the best tool to use.

Thanks in advance.

We do not work in retail but a 20,000 item inventory is pretty small. You would not need to use manufacturing you can just use the basic bill of materials for those items that are comprised of component items. How are you going to keep track of all the daily transactions that increase and decrease inventory? Are you integrating with RMS? If you are using RMS there is an elegant solution from Nodus that will integrate all the RMS stores with GP as headquarters. If this is GP only, there are the retail modules from Compass Technologies. You will have the purchase receipts and inventory historical trial balance tables and you can use the canned reports in GP and SSRS or you can create your own. Not too mention if you are on BRL AM you will have Analysis Cubes.
