How to move actual files that OLE links point to

Due to storage considerations, we need to move all of the 120GB of OLE objects to another storage resource. These are the objects that we link to from GP. How can this be accomplished, since I believe each object embeds the link also?

You have to know if the files are being linked to or are being imbedded when they are attached in GP. If they are being linked to you have no choice but to reattach all the files again if you do the server move. If the files are imbedded all you should need to do is change the path in the Dex.ini to reflect were you moved ALL the files to.

    Hey Mike,

First and foremost please test everything first but here is what I did. Please keep in mind that is was several years ago so I beg forgiveness in advance if I miss something.

With everyone out of GP do the following:

First Backup everything. SQL, Program Files, the works.

Second look in the Dex.Ini file (usally in the GP folder or the GP\Data folder depending on what version you are on) for  the actual current locations of the OLE files. The lines you are looking for are something like "OLEPath= <some location>" and I think there was a "OLEPathHR= <some location>" as well. There may be others as well depending on what modules and features you have installed.

Third, if any of the locations discovered in the Dex.ini file were not backed up in step one back them up as well.

Fourth, if the Dex.ini file was not backed up in step one then back it up as well.

Fifth, Move the OLE files to their new location.

Sixth, Edit the Dex.ini file to use the new location.

And unless I have fogotten something, you should be able to crank up GP and everything should be fine.

Of course, as I stated in the begining, please backup everything first, and test everything on a test system before doing anything on your production system.
