Flat Fee Inventory Item - Why populate Current Cost field?

As a Flat Fee item is not considered in the Cost of Goods Sold when an invoice for a sales order is posted, why would you populate the /Current Cost/ field on the Item Maintenance card?
Is the /Current Cost/ for a Flat Fee item used elsewhere?
