Microsoft Dynamics GP (Archived)

In Dynamics GP, how would I split an existing asset into two components and track them as two separate assets?

Posted on by Microsoft Employee

I currently have an asset, 10 KM stretch of Road of which 6 KM has been paved. The cost of paving and the subsequent depreciation have been related to this original asset.

The client would like to separate the two components, the Paved and the Unpaved sections, as two separate assets. I know I can do a disposal of the original at NBV, and re-enter the two components at their related prportionate values. I know I can give them the same asset ID with different suffixes OR track them under a Master Asset ID.

Could someone tell me of a better approach, and warn me of any caveats and pitfalls please?

Thanks & Regards to all!

I think you can use the Transfer feature (Transactions > Fixed Assets > Transfer.  You can transfer an amount or a percentage.  If you are moving the asset to a new location, structure or Class, you can change that too.  When you click transfer, it creates a second asset with the same Asset ID but a new suffix.

All numbers in the second asset are changed by the amount you have entered.  Either percentage or amount.  The Asset Card, Acquisition Cost will reduce.  The asset Purchase Window items will be reduced, and the Book fields will be adjusted.

When you run the posting routine, the source Doc will begin with FAXFR.  The old amounts are removed from the original asset and the new amounts are entered, along with the new amounts for the new asset.

Based on my limited experience with Fixed Assets, I think you are on the right track
