Quick Manufacturing Orders and Serial Numbers

Does anyone else in the community use Quick MO's within Dynamics GP?  If so, do any of you track serial numbers using the Quick MO functionality?

We are trying to figure out how best to automate the process of capturing the serial numbers of raw goods into the system, tying them to MO's and then linking the component serial number to the finished good serial number.  In our case, we have one BOM component that is serialized.  Instead of creating a second serial number for the finished good, we are planning, right now anyway, to use the BOM component serial number as the finished goods serial number.

We use In Touch software from Accellos along with bar-code guns for scanning bar codes.  However, thier software only integrates with the full MO module and the full MO module is overkill for us.  So we are left to find some other solution.

We have considered using the full manufacturing module.  However, we have a very small operation and the overhead associated with the full manufacturing module seems like too much for us.

I am testing out having the technicians use USB scanners to scan the serial numbers into a SharePoint list and then writing an XSLT to pull the data from the SharePoint list and convert it to the GP macro text.  Then, the technician can just click a button, save the macro and run it in GP.

If we get bigger, going with the full manufacturing module will definitely be a possibility.

Jason, have you considered using the regular Mfg functionality.   You can backflush all the components to get the same functionality as the Quick MO.   But doing it in the regular windows, you can receive the FG before you issue raw materials (assuming you are doing std costing).    Another option is to use the automated data collection functionality.   This allows you to post raw materials as you use them and use the funtionality of your barcode solution.

    Thank you for the reply.

We are actually seeking a way to use bar-codes and to scan raw goods into a system during manufacturing and have them get into GP when the MO is closed after the items have been manufactured without having to insert all of them at that point.

It seems like the system would have been designed so the serial numbers could be inserted into the system before the quick MO closes; while the items are being sourced out of raw goods or while they are being assembled.

We are aware that the system can natively tie parent serial numbers to component serial numbers.  The GP UI is very cumbersome, however, AND the point at which the parts are available for scanning is well before the serial numbers can be inserted.

I am investigating using macros, writing a custom application to manage the serial numbers or look for a third-party to manage the serial numbers either completely outside of GP or to insert them into GP automatically.

I am not yet sure which method will prove to be the best one.

    Jason,

I may not be understanding the gist of your question.  I'm assuming you are asking how to best use a non-barcode solution.  I also don't understand what you mean by "tying them to MO's and then linking the component serial number to the finished good serial number".  Manually this is existing functionality.  Since 9.0, I think, you been able to call out what serials or lots are used as components on a Quick MO if the checkbox is checked in MO setups.  And linking the serials of the mfg'd part to the serials of the components is standard functionality as well.  Are you just trying to make this process faster?  It can be a little cumbersome.

    Thanks,
