Connect AX Data Source with Common Data Service

Hi everyone.

I've developed power apps to connect AX 2012 data source.

I want to make app for any user to connect data source and create / edit / delete the data and want to use common data service not gateway.

If anyone knows how to connect SQL server for AX 2012 data source with common data service and how can I make an app including the function that enable not only select also create, update, delete for the data, please give any directions or steps.

Thanks, I've learned many things from all community post and materials.

    there are 2 safe ways in 2012 to allow create/delete data from external app

    * Aif Services  docs.microsoft.com/.../consuming-microsoft-dynamics-ax-services-from-an-external-client

    * DMF Services ax2012dmfdataimport.blogspot.com/.../microsoft-dynamics-ax-2012-data-import_9.html

    If you Need more detailed step by step guide, comment below, there are plenty of examples online.

    Thanks Crispin,

    Could I ask is it possible to use common data service with above services which you mentioned or is there any other service to use CDS?

    You can't connect AX 2012 using the CDS.  It doesn't work.  You can use a gateway, however, you did mention you don't want to do that.

    Alternatively, as mentioned above, I believe you can use AIF.

    Hi Daniel,

    I think that it's possible to use CDS through Web API.

    [View:https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/powerapps/developer/common-data-service/webapi/overview:750:50]

    A possible scenario could be work with a C# application to get data from CDS through this API and then, send information to AX using a custom WebService.

    MikS is correct.  You can use C# and the AX AIF as described here:

    www.axpulse.com/.../

    However, if you are wanting to READ data, a On Premise Gateway works very well for that.

    We are currently designing a Power APPS app to READ and WRITE data to//from AX 2012 R2 and are using the Gateway to read data into the Common Data Model and then using AX AIF via C# Web API to read data back from the Common Data Model into AX.

    Through gateway. you can read/write data directly from/to AX database or another SQL on premise database, without using the CDS.

    So, if you are using the gateway, why you need also to use the CDS?

    Yes, you can write directly to the AX database, however, that would not be advised as you would miss all the business logic contained on the AX table methods (Insert, update, delete, modified field, etc.).

    If you are going to write into AX, it would be better to do that via AIF.

    Fully agree with you. For this reason, in my case, I'm using gateway to read/write on a SQL on-premise database, not directly on AX.

    Next, I'm using a C# application in order to read data from this SQL database (not AX), and then, on the same C# application, I call a custom WebService to write data on AX, and thanks to this I don't lose the business logic on AX methods.

    I suppose you are using CDS with the same purpose that I am using on-premise SQL database, don't you? The main purpose here is not to use directly the Dynamics AX database.
