Synced Tasks are Marked Completed

I have Server-Side Sync set up with an Exchange server. I create a task in CRM and leave the Activity Status as Open. Save and close the task. When the task is synced and appears in Outlook it is marked Completed. Opening the task in CRM it is also marked Completed now.

What could be causing this?

    Hi there,

when you create the task, do you enter a date in the field DUE?

    Kind regards,

    Karsten

    Karsten,

Thanks for asking. The task I created has a future due date. 8/31/16 in this case.

I've found the same behavior occurring. This is CRM 2016 on-premise (8.1.0.359), using server side sync. This was upgraded from 2013 through 2015, and I've not previously seen this happening. Possibly a bug with this release?

OK, thanks, that's good info. I'm also working with CRM 2016 on-prem (8.1.0.359) so perhaps it is just a bug with this version.

    Hi,

it seems to be a bug. I've also CRM 2016 OnPremise (8.1.0.359) and I can verify the bug. After the task is synchronized to the mail server, the task is set to completed. I think this might be, because in Outlook, there is no status "Open" and therefore the task is closed.

Thanks for the input. Outlook should treat open CRM tasks as unfinished (unchecked). This worked fine in our CRM 2013 environment, so is just manifesting now. Appointments are slightly different, as Outlook has no notion of status (active/completed/cancelled). Our users have always had to go in and mark these as complete in CRM after they've happened (I know we could workflow this a bit but it's been counted as a verification step for our salespeople). Not really tested that behaviour in the affected environment.

Any update to this issue? Have just run into this exact same thing. Solved the problem with disabling server-side-sync but not a great solution

Not as far as I know. There don't appear to be any updates for Dynamics CRM available, and it's not something that can really be fixed by users.

I had a case opened at Microsoft, to check this behavior and they confirmed, that this is a bug.

Microsoft also provides a Hotfix for this bug.

So it looks like there is a fix.  If this is a serious problem for your org MS will issue you a Critical Hot Fix.  The support rep said there is a CRM 2016 update coming in December.  It seems this is well documented as Dynamics 365 with lots of additional features/updates. But if the task sync is critical they will issue you a hot fix.  Have received for 2016 on-prem and it work.
