Microsoft Dynamics SL (Archived)

No menu displays

Posted on by Microsoft Employee

I have a client whose IT person came in the other day and "work on a virus problem".  Ever since then, when this user launches SL on her workstation, she is able to enter her user name and password but the menus never display.  No error message is issued.  She can open some items like printer setup and tools/options and those screens appear to work.  If we attempt to direct launch a screen (e.g., 0101000), nothing appears and 0101000 does not show in task manager.  We tried deleting the menu cache files but that did not have any affect and the files were not rebuilt.  We deleted the SL client (they are running SL 2011 with no service packs) and re-installing the client (run as administrator) with no affect on the problem.  This user gets her menu display when running SL from another workstation.  Other users on other workstations are running just fine.  The user has local admin rights to her workstation.  No matter what SL user id we use, including SYSADMIN, we get the same problem.

It appears that whatever the IT person did has affected the ability for SL to launch properly.  Unfortunately, this IT person is on vacation this week so we cannot ask him what he did.

Has anyone encountered such a problem and figured out the solution?  With no error message being issued and the menu cache files not being recreated, it is a bit hard to determine what is wrong.

We never figured out what the actual issue was and ended up wiping the workstation, re-installing Windows and the SL client and it is working once again.  Exactly what we had hoped to avoid.

Have you tried logging in with a different windows user on that workstation? Maybe it is as simple as needing to delete the local profile.

    Mark,

Thanks for the quick response.  The menu cache files were hand deleted since we could not get access to any SL menu items on that workstation.  What I actually did was cut them out of that folder and place them in another temp folder on the server.  When the SL launch did not rebuild them, I copied them back to that folder.  The security shows the user has full rights to that folder and the fact that I could cut these files out of that folder and paste them back in again indicates the user has full rights to that folder.

Also, when SL is launched, we are not even getting the progress message that SL is retrieving or recreating the menu items like you normally do suggesting that it is not even getting to that part of the logic.  Since the non-menu items work (like printer setup), it suggests that SL is basically running.  My gut feeling is that something is blocking SL's ability to deal with XML files.  It is likely some sort of DLL issue but I have no idea what.

    Rick,

When you deleted menu cache, was it done manually by removing the files in the following folder, or by using the Tool/Options/Toolbar Cache/Menu System option?

    C:\Users\[username]\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft Dynamics SL\MenuCache

Does the user have rights to read/write to the above folder?  I would imagine if the menu cache is not being rebuilt, then the user might not have the privileges to write to the folder?
