Production Order Rework for Items with Tracking Dimension of Serial and activation at Production Order Creation

The Setup:

- MS Dynamics AX 2012 R3 (CU8)

- Serial-Number-Group.jpg

The Issue:

A production order creates 50 Serialized Items and puts them in Finished Goods. Upon further review, some of these Items need to be reworked.  When the production order is created, new serial numbers are generated and registered.  When I try to update these serial numbers, I get an error message "Serial number XXXXX already exists physically in the inventory."  I know this is because of the setting "Serial Number Control" which only allows 1 serial number in inventory at a time, but is there a way to do a Production Rework to create a Serial number that exists and consume that Serial number without changing this setting?  Or, is there a way to have the Serial numbers still generate at the start for Production Orders but when doing a Rework Order, not have the Serial numbers generated till the end?

On the rework the end item is the same, so you cannot generate the serial number, you have to define it as the existing one. The BOM will consume the same item and serial number which will avoid your stock issue and ensure the costs flow through to the parent.

As it stands right now, if I'm creating a Production Order for a Single Serialized Item, I can specify the Serial number in the Production Order Creation screen, but if it is left blank and I do a Quantity greater than 1, new serial numbers are created.

I just did a test and what I am able to do is create the Production Order for the rework items, new serial numbers are created, but after I post the picking list for the Serial numbers that I want to rework, then I can update the registrations to use the rework Serial Numbers.  So, I guess there is a "work around" but it isn't pretty because I'm using up more serial numbers that I'm not doing anything with.

Why would you leave the serial number blank when you know it is a rework and you will do a rework - is this because of the multiple reworks so you have >1 on the rework order?

This will then depend upon how you specify the serial number group, and whether you create on physical etc. You can still define the serial numbers in the registration, but if it creates at start this is the configuration you have, so it will create additional serial numbers you then dont use because you are creating them when you do. Review this setting and see if it can be changed (The on physical update on the serial number group pictured).
