Lead record customerid field - How does it relate to the parentaccountid and parentcontactid fields?

In the Lead record there is a field called customerid where you can select an Account or a Contact related to the Lead.

There are also two other fields, parentaccountid and parentcontactid where you can also select an Account or a Contact.  I do not understand the relationship between these three fields.

For example.

If the Lead is to me (Michael Starling) and I have a Contact record in the CRM and that Contact has a parent Account (BMT).
The customerid would be either BMT (if entered as a Company) or Michael Starling (if entered as a Contact).

The parentaccountid (if entered) would be BMT.
The parentcontactid (if entered) would be Michael Starling.

We would not want to enter the data twice. So where should we enter it and what is the implication on the functionality of the CRM.

Any help on this would be much appreciated.

    Hi Michael

Yes customerid is a lookup to both Account or a Contact related to the Lead.

parentaccountid allows you to Identify an Existing Parent Account

parentcontactid allows you to Identify the Existing Parent Contact

This is useful when we qualify the lead to an opportunity, it can create it against the relevant customer records and help prevent against duplication during qulaification. There are two relationships between lead and account. One for showing the originating lead of an account (1:N from lead to account), and the other is the customer field on the lead form (1:N from account to lead).

but I could not find any parentaccountid on the lead, maybe its because your using the older version of crm.  you do not need to use all these lookups such as Parentaccount ID  at lead stage unless its for an existing records, so it will prevent creating a Duplicated Account during Qualification.

Still confused I am afraid.  The root of our problem is that we never want to create an Account (or a Contact) from a Lead.  The only thing we want to do is to create an Opportunity.  For us a Lead is a lead to an Opportunity only.  So to stop creating duplicate Accounts and Contacts it seems we have to fill in the parentaccountid and parentcontactid fields.  And this brings us back to the problem that we also have to fill the customerid field and we are therfore adding the same infomation twice.

If you add a relationship between the Contact and the Lead you can change the mapping rules so that the Contact, Account data is filled in for you as well as the rest of the contact/account related info on the form should you wish. When you Qualify the Lead by default it checks those look ups and only creates new accounts or contacts if they are empty and the contact/account main form fields are populated (Think a contact is always created) It then creates the Opportunity and associates it with the record created or linked to. This would meet your need and minimise the data entry.
