Is it possible to run Dynamics 6 over the inetrnet for employees to work at home?

Posted on by 110

I read in another post that for v10 it is not supported, and I'd bet the same answer goes for v6.  However, support, apparently doesn't matter much for us.  I'd just like to know if someone's managed to do it and how.

    Robert,

just one word : OMG !... I've been there, fighted for it, dreamed of the $$$ and left after 6 years of hopeless desperation... The company had just deciced to drop GP and invest 1Mio$ into an new ERP system that they thought would solve all of their pain points... What they didn't understand, it's not the system that makes the business, but the money and the effort that you put into it to make it work as it is supposed to work... not the other way around. Trying to make an ERP system work the way you want is definitly going the wrong way.

Tip to you... contact Microsoft and find a local partner in your area that sells and supports Dynamics GP... ask them for running demo or a trial version of GP. Set this up on a virtual machine and show it to your boss... Unless his name is Ebenezer Scrooge, you should get some funding to upgrade... otherwise your business is just at total risk of breakdown with no help out there to help you recover... You'll barely find someone with knowledge about Pervasive and GP 6.0.

Good luck with your Dynamics GP...

Yack indeed.  That's the very version that we're still running, down to the pSQL backend...and not looking to update at all.  My boss seems to think that there's some company out there that will support us and that they're just holding out to sell us newer versions.  If we hold out long enough, they'll give in a give us free support for what we have...forever...and it'll work faster than the speed of thought...over the magical aether...and money will drop down from the sky when he logs in.

But I'm getting that, even though there are ways to shoehorn it to work or to set it up over terminal server/citrix, the possibility for data corruption is only outmatched by the dead slowness of use...Assuming that the pSQL version is amenable to serving up this way in the first place.

    Robert,

You have a long road ahead of you to catch up with Dynamics GP :-)... I started in 2003 with GP 7.0 and they just had turned off the server that was hosting the V 6.0 running off a Pervasive SQL server..(yack !). The version 7.0 was better suited with an SQL 2000 ... you may spend a look at Victoria Yudin's page about the old GP versions (9.0 and below) : victoriayudin.com/.../gp-9-0-and-older

    Good luck.

As long as you have enough Terminal server license to accomodate all the users you want to log in.

Got it.  As you can tell, I'm not up on the latest with Dynamics.  If we went the route of a terminal server, would we be able to log on more than 1 person at any time?

It's not possible. By that I mean that it may technically be possible but the performance is unreasonably and unacceptably slow. I've seen people try it and it is not pretty. Your best option is terminal server or Citrix.

David Musgrave addressed this in community.dynamics.com/.../why-can-39-t-i-run-microsoft-dynamics-gp-via-odbc-over-a-wan-63.aspx

It applies for all GP versions except for the new Web Client released with GP 2013.
