Dashboards and Business Units

I am currently re-working the organization structure of dynamics to include a root org and two separate business units. I'm doing this because I need to partition certain data between the two business units. I'd like each business unit to have security roles with different 'homepage' dashboards. When I try to "Enable Security Roles" in the dashboard configuration I can only set dashboards for the "root" business unit, and not the child business units. Is there a way to designate dashboards by security role if those security roles are in individual business units that are children of the root business unit? Thanks for any help.

One approach you could have is to create empty security roles at the organization level for those dashboards you want to share. When a security role, CRM will create the same security role in the child business units. You can then apply those security roles to a team or set of users and achieve what you are trying to do.

This would be similar to what Anil Shah explains in his blog entry: community.dynamics.com/.../role-based-forms

    Hope this helps!

    Hi,

you are right you can only assign security roles from the root business unit.

Can you try creating a security role for each child BU in the root and assign these to their

respective dashboards. Then assign each security role to the team of the respective child BU.

    I think that should work

Thanks for the replys. I have not worked with teams before in the CRM. How does the use of teams come into play here?

When a business unit is created, a default team for that business unit is also created by CRM. You can use the 'Enable Security Roles' feature to assign security roles to each default team of your child business units.

Thanks for all your help. I was able to get things working through creating empty security roles, teams, and the enable security role feature. I am experiencing an odd issue - I have two test users, each assigned a security role from one of two possible business units. If I sign into one, then sign out, and sign into another, I sometimes see the incorrect dashboard or form for the business unit. But if I log out, close the browser, and clear cache between logging in to each test user account, I see everything as I would hope - correct dash and correct form(s). Have you ever experienced anything like this? Is this an issue with how dynamics cache's things?

You're welcome. Glad that you were able to work it out. I have experienced this cache issue but haven't been able to determine the root cause. I believe it has to do with how CRM manages user sessions but I have no proof, and it does seem to be consistent in my experience. CTR+F5 (refresh) or clearing the cache usually resolve this issue.
