Reducing number of Unmanaged Solution and Managed Solutions

Dear Experts,

Let me inform the scenario of our current Org status of Development, UAT and Production.

Till now what we did is, we create a different unmanaged solution in Dev for a single change in system, and we deploy that solution as a Managed one in UAT and Prod.

So currently, we have lot of (almost 200) unmanaged solutions in Dev. Same (not exactly) number of solutions in UAT and Prod as Managed.

We want to get rid of thes number of Solutions.

For clarity we dont have same number of solution in all 3 Orgs.

What would be the best way to reduce the number of Solutions out of this situation. Like one Solution for all Entity and Customization, one solution for Security Roles etc..

Thanks in advance.

yes, it will work but you have to make sure that all the required components are imported in the new the solution otherwise some components will delete without giving any error (if there are no dependencies with other components) and then you will loose the data even after importing in back from source.

    Hi ,

Yes deleting managed solution will be delete all the data and customization. So think accordingly.

If you add all the components in  a single solution you might face missing component issue while importing merged solution. However this is the only way you can manage your problem.

In addition let say you have all 100 solution in UAT , and then on top op that you have merged solution . In future you may face issue while deleting any component or fields , because of all the component of merged solution dependent with other managed solution.

    Hello again,

Since you have managed environment , i am guessing you continue using the manage solutions in your target.

coming too your questionns. Once you have a managed solution with all the components in your target. you can go ahead and delete your other small managed solution. Nothing will happen to the data and your customizations since everything is there in the new BIG solution.

RE: Reducing number of Unmanaged Solution and Managed Solutions

Its depends on the way how you wants to manage the org. if you wants to keep all the org as managed other than dev then import managed or it is okay to have unmanaged solutions even in prod.

one thing you have to keep in mind that, in the future maintenance, if in case something needs to role back due to some issues then it will be easy if you have managed or that will be a manual task to rollback in each org.

    Good thought.

One question tough, Do i need to import those Solution in UAT or Prod as Managed one or Unamanged one ?

    I think..

Managed - It can be a failure. Lets assume its gets success in import. If i delete other managed solutions, what will happen with the data and customization of those deleted managed solutions ?

Unmanaged - It can be successful import as unmanaged one.  Same question as above, If i delete other managed solutions, what will happen with the data and customization of those deleted managed solutions ?

I think doing a PoC will be a good thing.

But though if you have more idea on this, it would be great if you can share that here.

    Thanks.

RE: Reducing number of Unmanaged Solution and Managed Solutions

    Hi,

Prepare a managed solution with all the components in the all 3orgs and import it first in low impact org then try to delete managed solutions one after one. if there is any dependency error then all the components to the complete solution which you prepared and import again. It should be ways of working  that you have to maintain the complete solution for every small change. so that your solution sits on top layer and allows you to delete all the lower layered solutions.
