Updating Visual Studio removed Finance and Operations (D365) Extension

So earlier today I finally had enough of the issue where VS 2017 would crash whenever I moved a tab and was able to find a solution (and reiterate that I wasn't going insane): https://developercommunity.visualstudio.com/t/visual-studio-2017-crashes-when-moving-any-tab-any/1332361

However, when I did that update on Visual Studio, the all important extension got removed:

I *know* at some point I simply downloaded this extension and installed it manually; does anyone know where the link is or where I might be able to locate such file?  I've been searching for over and hour and coming up empty handed, closest I've found is here: https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/dynamics365/fin-ops-core/dev-itpro/dev-tools/update-development-tools
Currently unzipping that massive download and will report back if I find what I need in that download.  But thought to post here while I'm waiting to see if there are any other options.

Nota bene: this _was_ possible (downloading the extension) at some point because I did exactly that when I upgraded Visual Studio 2015 to Visual Studio 2017 back in mid-2020.  But... I've slept since then, so perhaps I'm losing my mind.

Thanks all, and as always, take care.

Good news: unzipping the latest Quality Update out of LCS and then following the above Microsoft link does work, although the messaging is slightly cryptic for my tastes: https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/dynamics365/fin-ops-core/dev-itpro/dev-tools/update-development-tools

Find the appropriate file in LCS under Asset Library > Software deployable package:

Once you've downloaded the massive 6GB file you'll unzip said file, then install:
    1. Microsoft.Dynamics.Framework.Tools.Install.vsix
    2. Microsoft.Dynamics.Framework.Tools.InternalDevTools.vsix

Now open your instance of VS and you should be solid.  Hope this helps out others with similar-type issues!

Downloading an application update from LCS is the right way. For example, download Platform Update 40 (if you don't have it already), unblock the file, unzip it and go to DevToolsService\Scripts. There you'll find Microsoft.Dynamics.Framework.Tools.Installer.vsix.

The VSIX has never been up for download anywhere, it has always been part of the regular update package so you must be thinking of something else. That said, typically after you've installed an update you can find the installers somewhere on your VM (avoiding the need to re-download the whole update).

As far as the issue you're reporting. this is fixed in newer release. There was some Visual Studio change in how extensions are installed that cause this issue. The VS team helped us to ensure we're installing the VSIX in the newer way to avoid it from being removed with updates etc.

I have been trying to find a way to upgrade my VS 2015 to 2017 in one of my cloud hosted envs. I downloaded the 10.0.16 service update zip file, unzipped it, hit the file 'Microsoft.Dynamics.Framework.Tools.InternalDevTools' , when I install it says Installin VS 2015 tools. I dont see a way to have VS 2017. Any help?

You should deploy a new environment:

    community.dynamics.com/.../action-required---net-version-and-visual-studio-2017

"by April 2021 we will require everyone to have deployed a new VM with VS2017, to be ready for the April release that will no longer have support for VS2015."

Okay, does that mean we cannot update the existing VS versions from 2015 to 2017 on our cloud hosted envs?

I'm sure you can update Visual Studio. But whether the system will still work for D365FO development, and whether you are able to keep installing MS updates to it, is unclear.

My suggestion is to follow Microsoft's instructions and deploy new systems. You should anyway treat dev systems as disposable, because you might need to redeploy them every now and then.

I'll defer to Nikolaos' expertise as his advice has been spot-on, deploying a new environment is best.

However in the past when I've upgraded from VS 2015 to 2017 I simply downloaded the newer version from Microsoft, installed it, and then done the steps above to install the plugin for VS 2017 for D365, after which I then uninstalled VS 2015.

But again, a new deployment is probably the best (and most straightforward) solution.

    Best of luck!
