Hi All ,

In any ERP implementations ERP vendors will suggest to maintain different environments like Test , UAT ,Pre prod and Development.

Could any pioneer explain in detail what is the different between test , UAT , Pre prod and Development. ?

Assume that if any development activity has been done , then what is the envrironment sequence to move that code?

Expecting a detail explanation or link to understand the importance of the above environments and sequence of code movement between above environments.

Thanks in advance.

Development environments, as the name suggest, are used for developing code changes.

Production is the deployed application that end users use to do their business.

Test environments are used for testing that an application works correctly. You should never deploy changes to production without testing. UAT means User Acceptance Test, so it's a type of tests.

Pre-prod is a kind of staging environment before deploying to production. You can use it for many different things, but if we're talking about AX 2012, it's usually used for compilation and preparation of a modelstore for deployment to production (read Deploying Customizations Across Microsoft Dynamics AX 2012 Environments if you want to learn more about deployments).

When you define your environments and their purpose, the sequence should be obvious. For example, you clearly have to deploy code to a test environment before production, because the purpose of testing is making sure the solution good enough for production.

How you design the process is up to you. Some team use many dev boxes, some use separate FAT and UAT environment, some have just a single TEST, or several TEST environments for different branches, some use build automation or release management, and so on. There is no universal answer.
