Hi there.

I have a customer who wants to upgrade their dot net framework to version 4 on their servers, and they want to know if it will have any adverse effects on their GP server.

They are running Server 2003 64-bit, SQL 200 and GP 9 SP 2. - don't ask why tey don't want to upgrade.....

i haven't been able to find anything online that says DON'T go to dot net 4 with this combination, but i thought i'd ask the community first before i say yes or no to the customer.

any advice will be great.

Simon

    Thanks Ryan.

that is untimately what they have decided to do. They have virtualized the server so that they can test the framework upgrade.

I would not think so, but if it does then they are not in a great place. If the customer is using any sort of virtualization technology, they could take an in-place snapshot of the environment and restore back if any issues occur.

Otherwise, they could setup a second server as a backup in case anything would go wrong. Realistically, the .net frameworks are not upgrades but additional versions that should work side by side with other versions. With any applications on the server, there is a potential for problem, but I would not think there would be adverse applications.

If they do not have any redundancy in their network for backup servers, secondary servers, or disaster recovery you may want to have a discussion on that before they continue with any solution.

    Hi Aaron

i agree 100% with you, they should upgrade all aspects however, they are firm on not wanting to change anything on their platform at this stage.

they just want to know dot net 4 will cause any problems. MY problem is that it's almost impossible to tell as - as you mentioned - you can't get any support of these lines anymore.

talk about being stuck between a rock and a hard place....

    thanks for the advice though

As Server 2003, SQL Server 2000, and GP 9 are all past their dates of mainstream support, a better ordering of their priorities would be to upgrade those things.
