Upgrade Path to GP 18.6

I'm hoping to get clarification on the upgrade path to GP 18.6 that is fully supported by Microsoft.

I'm looking at the 'Upgrading to Microsoft Dynamics GP' document: https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/dynamics/s-e/gp/hot_topic_mdgpupgrade_415#the-only-supported-upgrade-path-to-the-current-release-is-from-the-release-1-year-back-from-current-in-accordance-with-the-modern-lifecycle

There is a Note saying: 'As an example of a supported (tested by Microsoft) upgrade path to 18.6 (October 2023 Release) or 2023 Year-End would be from GP 18.4.1361 or later.'

Shortly after there's this statement: 'The only supported upgrade path to the current release is from the release 1 year back from current in accordance with the Modern Lifecycle.'

I'd prefer to upgrade from GP 18.4,1361 directly to GP 18.6 (skipping the GP 18.5 phase) but these two lines contradict one another.

Hi John-

My thought is you should be able to go 18.6 from 18.4.1361, but I wouldn't recommend it because of the second statement that contradicts the first statement. If something goes wrong, then you just have to start over again.

That article does contradict itself and I was scratching my head for a bit reading and re-reading it. I would go from 18.4 to 18.5 to 18.6 and not skip 18.5.

Hi, I agree with Joseph, based on the upgrade paths table, you can upgrade from to 18.5 then to 18.6.

Hi John,

Just wanted to check if you did the direct upgrade from 18.4 to 18.6 or 1 version at a time. I'm on the same situation and needing to upgrade from 18.4 to 18.7. and not sure if I have to go thru 18.5 and 18.6.

We've been having success with the following upgrade paths:

GP 16.00.0864 or later >> GP 18.5.1556 (October 2022 Release) or GP 18.5.1596 (2022 Year-End)
GP 18.3.1173 or later >> GP 18.5.1556 (October 2022 Release) or 2022 Year-End
GP 18.4.1361 or later >> GP 18.6.1695 (October 2023 Release)
GP 18.5.1556 or later >> GP 18.7.1756 (October 2024 Release)

I believe the contradiction comes from the Redmond Modern Lifecycle policy verses what upgrade paths Fargo actually tests.
