Difference between AX 2009 and AX 2012 role based security?

Hi,

I am new in AX world and just have little knowledge about AX 2009. Could anyone please tell me briefly what the difference between security in AX 2009 and the role based security in AX 2012.

Another question how MS is going to handle this role based security in upcoming release AX 7? Will all be lost whatever we have done or we are planning to setup security in current release.

    Hi,

I can only answer the first part:

    ALL is different ...

AX2009: Security is done through so called security keys that are assigned to AOT elements; user groups are setup just like other data. You basically start from scratch in every implementation.

AX2012: Several artifact types exist to model security. This is done in the AOT. There are roles, duties (tasks), single privilges. AX provides 75 or more roles out of the box, so in theory, you can just get started without doing any security setup yourself (except for assigning users to roles).

Well, this of course is just a very rough version of it ... what can be said with certainty is: Nothing you did on AX2009 security can be reused in AX2012.

Hope this helps ... but ask further questions to go into more details where you need them.

    Kind regards,

    Annette

    Hi Axrainer,

The big change is that there are now in AX2012 pre defined roles which are build upon duties and privileges. A privilege contains one or more entry points ( menu items). The roles are stored in the AOT and are customizable as they will not fit for all companied. You can also add new roles, duties and privileges.

in AX2009 you had to setup the permissiins from scratch. You had to copy groups if you would require the same group for different company access. Now you can use a role and assign one or.more organizations.

You can find some more information here: technet.microsoft.com/.../gg731787.aspx

There are no details communicated on AX7. As AX2012R3 is the base for the next release, I do not expect enormous changes.

    Hi,

in Ax2009 administrators had to determine which tables and fields were required for a task, and then grant a user permissions for those tables and fields. In Microsoft Dynamics AX 2012, security management is more intuitive and less time-consuming, developer create privilege and assign entry point ( menu item) and Ax grant the permission for controls, tables, sub form in the background, and I think MS will continue with the current security structure because it very flexible and also MS released tool to make it easier.

    Hi,

All three members have already explained it in a very descriptive way. Andre is the best person to take guidance about Role based Security you can even have a look on his blog posts about security development tool www.kaya-consulting.com/.../tips-on-ax-2012-security-development-tool-part-1

I think you should go through this white paper to get initial understanding www.microsoft.com/.../details.aspx

Security in AX 2009 was really a pain and MS has done a great job in this area to make it quite easy in AX 2012.
