New Installation for SQL server. Which OS should I choose?

Hi everyone.

My server computer which was running SQL server express 2005, finally died (Imotherboard failure).  It was running XP SP3.

Now I am planning to purchase a new computer to act as a server.  Reading through the forum threads, it appears as if Windows 10 is not a good idea.  Is windows 7 the best option, or should I attempt to run XP on top of new hardware?   I am tempted to continue to use XP since it worked so flawlessly for  all these years.

If Windows 7 is the way to go?  And does it really matter if I am using Home Basic, Home Premium or Professional edition?

Should I use Sql Server Express 2008 R2 or will Sql Server Express 2005 work just fine on Windows 7?

FYI, I am running RMS Ver 2.0.0116

Any advice will be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks for the response Osama.

I ended up going with Windows 7 PRO SP1 on the server, running SQL 2008 R2 SP3.

On the client side, I am *still* running XP PRO SP3, with SQL 2005 backward compatibility DMO objects installed.

So far so good, everything seems work o.k., but connection to the database seems somewhat slower.   Do I need to reindex?

    Rgds,

    Samba
