We have Items where we have secondary units of measure with Intra-class uom conversion setup. We are able to create sales order lines using the secondary unit of measure and it works fine. When we create a Movement journal and enter the secondary unit of measure the posted transaction uses the primary unit of measure but the quantity for the secondary uom that was entered instead of converting the quantity properly. Are there any suggestions on what needs to be done to make the secondary unit of measure work in the Movement journal?

Hi,
In D365 Finance & Operations, secondary units of measure with intra-class UOM conversions work correctly in sales and purchase transactions because those processes support dual/secondary unit handling natively.

However, Inventory Movement journals primarily post inventory transactions using the inventory unit (primary unit of measure). When a secondary unit is entered manually on a Movement journal line, the system does not always automatically convert and persist the quantity correctly unless the conversion setup and item tracking configuration fully support the scenario.

Please review the following areas:

Unit conversion setup

Verify the intra-class unit conversion is configured correctly under:
Product information management > Setup > Unit conversions

Ensure the conversion exists in the correct direction and for the specific item if item-specific conversions are used.

Inventory unit vs secondary unit

Confirm the inventory unit on the released product.

Movement journals ultimately post inventory transactions in the inventory unit, so the entered quantity should convert back to the inventory unit during posting.

Catch weight functionality

If the business scenario requires maintaining both primary and secondary quantities operationally, review whether Catch Weight functionality should be used instead of standard secondary units of measure.

Standard inventory journals have limited support for secondary quantity behavior compared to sales/purchase processes.

Journal line behavior

After entering the secondary UOM on the movement journal line, verify whether the Quantity field recalculates immediately before posting.

If it does not recalculate automatically, this may indicate:

missing conversion setup,

unsupported journal behavior,

or a customization gap.
