Upgrade from AX2012 to D365 FINOPS with 3 partitions

Dear All,

We are in the process of upgrading from AX2012 to D365 for a customer with 3 partitions. Microsoft Upgrade tool only supports upgrade for 1 partition last time I checked and was wondering if this was still the case. Due to this limitation, we have to move the data for the other two partitions via a combination of scripts and utilities that we developed inhouse. The challenge here is that there is a *huge* amount of data and a large number of legal entities are also involved.

My query is if the upgrade tool has been updated to support multiple partitions.

Note : This is an On-Prem implementation and we have successfully completed upgrade of 1 partition.

I have the same question (0)

    Hi Noul,

There is no change in the upgrade features. You can read the statement about partitions here: docs.microsoft.com/.../upgrade-overview-2012

Before upgrading to Dynamics 365 you can convert the data from multiple partitions to a single partition in the AX 2012 database (please test with a copy first). You can also consider installing three different deployments of Dynamics 365. Or migrate with help of data management tools the setup and master data and post opening transactions. The history will be then available in a read-only copy of AX 2012.

When you are already live with some companies in Dynamics 365, you can't rerun the data upgrade and add more legal entities.

    Hi André,

Thank you so much for your response. :)

Can you provide details on how we can combine the partitions in the AX2012 dB? ( Links, documents? )

I checked with my colleagues and they're saying combining partitions in AX2012 is not possible.

From a functional point of view moving all data to one partition is indeed not possible. You can try to find a SQL administrator who can create scripts for this purpose. It wouldn't be easy and I don't have experience with this myself.

In theory it is possible to loop all tables and replace partition information to have references to the 'initial' partition. It might be a lengthy running SQL statement.

A former colleague wrote a script to delete partitions and also looped all tables. I will contact him if he has that script available. It could be a start; then change the script to change partition values instead of deleting records from the tables.

    Hi Andre,

Yes, that would be helpful and we can start from there. Looking forward to what your colleague has to say.

    Hi Noul,

He is on vacation. I searched my directories for a copy but couldn't find it.
